Nebraska clinicals in a GW online NP program
Except for the Acute Care options, every GW online program is open to Nebraska nurses, and GW's licensure disclosures judge its NP and midwifery curricula sufficient for Nebraska. Nebraska's regulators oversee only schools preparing new nurses, so a GW graduate rotation there rests on GW's own rules, your license and the preceptor you recruit.

Nebraska is absent from GW's State Authorizations page, its FAQ and the provost's older list; GW admissions has the final word, and our state authorizations page follows those lists.
Nebraska regulates schools for new nurses, not graduate programs
The Nebraska Board of Nursing works through the Licensure Unit of the state Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Its approval reaches programs leading to a first nursing license. Programs for nurses already licensed, GW's MSN, DNP and certificates among them, fall outside it, and Nebraska keeps no list of outside graduate programs to look GW up on.
A few DHHS positions still shape a GW placement:
- Following NCSBN guidance, nursing practice happens where the student is, so a Nebraska rotation runs under Nebraska law.
- Anyone on the faculty who teaches NP students in Nebraska should hold a Nebraska APRN license, a matter for GW.
- Schools line up preceptors directly with facilities, and past initial licensure the school sets preceptor qualifications, so GW's preceptor requirements are the test your clinician must pass.
Also note a likely board merger: DHHS rosters from July 2026 no longer show the stand-alone APRN board that appeared through June, and nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and nurse-midwives now hold Board of Nursing seats.
The 2,000-hour transition, and matching your course
AANP rates Nebraska full practice, after a 2,000-hour stretch under a supervising provider for new NPs. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide asks for two years or more of advanced practice, so an NP just past it seldom fits. Physicians in the specialty qualify too.
Match the preceptor to the course. GW's 2021 guide sets FNP I in internal medicine, FNP II in OB/GYN and pediatrics and FNP III in family practice, and asks AGPCNP students for long-term care time in their final course; check today's rules on our rotation settings page. For FNP II's pediatric hours, Children's Nebraska, a dedicated children's system, is a sensible first call.
Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island
The Omaha metro passed a million residents in 2025, about 887,000 of them in Nebraska; Lincoln had roughly 352,000, while Grand Island stood near 78,000. Students reach out to Nebraska Medicine, CHI Health, Bryan Health, Methodist Health System and Children's Nebraska; any of them needs its own GW agreement.
With no Nebraska preceptor tax credit or stipend on record, a tidy request does the work: your course, your hours and GW's offer of library access at Himmelfarb, guest lecturing and a network of GW preceptors.
Licensing across the Omaha metro
NCSBN dates both Nebraska's and Iowa's compact implementation to January 19, 2018. About 122,000 Omaha-metro residents live in Iowa, and a multistate license held by a Nebraska resident works on both sides, so GW's rule of a license in every rotation state stays simple here. Nebraska hasn't enacted the APRN Compact, so your NP license is a separate application.

Questions GW students ask
Does Nebraska require GW to get approval before my clinicals?
No. DHHS limits Board approval to programs preparing people for their first nursing license, so a GW MSN, DNP or certificate rotation has no Nebraska approval or notice step. GW's own sequence still runs before your first hour: your Site Prospector entry, program director sign-off, the signed agreement and Complio.
Who regulates Nebraska NPs after the 2026 board change?
From July 2026 the rosters seat APRN members on the Board of Nursing and stop listing a separate APRN board, which points to a merger. No statute confirming it turned up, so when you apply for your Nebraska APRN license, check the DHHS Licensure Unit's nurse licensing page for the current process.
I hold a compact license from another state. Is that enough for Nebraska?
If your home state is a compact member and your license is multistate, it carries a privilege to practice in Nebraska. A license from a non-compact state, or a single-state license, stops at that state's border. GW's pre-clinical checklist wants a current, unrestricted RN license good in each state where you log hours.
Can my Nebraska employer be my clinical site?
GW has no current published rule on this. Its compliance page's first tip is to network with providers where you work, while a 2017 GW FAQ steered students toward preceptors outside their employer, with adviser approval. Ask your program director early, and read our workplace site page before you submit.
