GW nursing clinicals in Iowa
Iowans can apply to every GW online nursing option but Acute Care, and because Iowa belongs to the compact, an Iowa multistate license covers Iowa sites. The Iowa Board approves no out-of-state programs, yet it publishes a short list of duties for them, and one of those duties reaches your preceptor's license.

What GW's list says about Iowa
Iowa has no entry on GW's State Authorizations page. Only the Acute Care residency rule and one midwifery disclosure need attention.

Iowa's duties for schools based elsewhere
Iowa's Board of Nursing leaves approval of out-of-state programs to their home states. What it publishes instead is a set of conditions such a school still has to meet when its students train in Iowa:
- A go-ahead to operate in Iowa, issued by the state's College Aid bureau, where NC-SARA participation counts (GW is listed as a SARA participant)
- Compliance with Iowa law on top of its home state's rules, with data sent to the Board when asked
- Nursing faculty and preceptors on Iowa soil with active licenses, Iowa-issued or multistate
- Clinical contracts that spell out each party's duties, faculty control of student learning, yearly review and how the contract ends
Most of that list lands on GW's Clinical Placement Team and the affiliation agreement. The line that touches your search is licensure: a nurse preceptor in Iowa needs an active Iowa or multistate license, which lines up with GW's own demand for a current, unencumbered license.
Full practice and Iowa's preceptorship standard
AANP puts Iowa in its full practice group, so an experienced Iowa NP can precept you with no physician agreement in the background. Iowa's rule for its own ARNP programs (481 IAC 616.16) is a handy benchmark: Iowa wants most of an ARNP student's supervised hours spent beside an ARNP or physician sharing the student's future role and patient population, with a written agreement looked at yearly. For a GW FNP that points to family-practice clinicians; for a PMHNP, psychiatric ones.
Central Iowa's Des Moines area leads; Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Davenport's side of the Quad Cities come next. The largest names are University of Iowa Health Care, UnityPoint and MercyOne. Iowa also thanks preceptors in license credit: someone who spends at least 60 hours with a nursing student in an organized preceptorship can claim 6 contact hours toward renewal, on documentation from the supervising school.
Licensing: the student exemption skips RNs
Iowa Code 152.1 lets unlicensed nursing students practice within their coursework, but it stops applying the moment someone holds an RN, LPN or ARNP license anywhere in the country. Every GW graduate student is an RN, so the exemption never applies to you. Iowa's rule for post-licensure students at Iowa clinicals is plain: an active license, Iowa-issued or multistate, plus practice that follows Iowa Code.
Iowa implemented the compact on January 19, 2018. If Iowa is your home state for compact purposes, your multistate license also reaches Nebraska, Missouri and other member states. The Quad Cities are the trap: the Moline and Rock Island side is Illinois, still outside the compact, so training there takes an Illinois license. See the Illinois guide and GW's license rule.

Questions GW students ask
Can I start logging hours as soon as my Iowa preceptor agrees?
Not yet. GW first needs a Site Prospector submission for that preceptor and site, program director review, an executed affiliation agreement and your Complio clearance, and hours count only from the start of the term after clearance. GW's 2026 CORE workshop warns that entering a site before clearance may be cause for dismissal. Clearance lists every item.
I live in Iowa and hold an Iowa multistate license. Is that enough?
For Iowa sites, yes: the multistate license Iowa issues to its residents is your Iowa license, and it also carries a privilege in other compact states. It does nothing in a non-compact state. A rotation in Illinois or Minnesota would need a separate license from that state before GW could clear you.
Does GW keep a list of Iowa preceptors?
GW's Clinical Placement Team can share previously used sites and preceptors in your state, and GW says it is recruiting remote preceptors in most states. A name on that list can still decline, since each clinician decides term by term whether to take a student. The clinical site database page explains how to use it well.
What happens if my Iowa preceptor drops out mid-semester?
Tell your Clinical Experience Faculty and the Clinical Placement Team right away. GW's placement model answers a lost preceptor with ongoing intervention and support and a return to the identify step, and any new preceptor needs a fresh Site Prospector submission. Your placement advisor starts a replacement search as soon as you reach us; see preceptor dropped out.
