NP preceptors in Northern Virginia
Northern Virginia is where GW Nursing keeps its campus, and for many GW students it is the most practical place to train: a compact license reaches it, and the suburbs are dense with hospitals and practices. The catch is that each system gates students differently, starting with Inova, which lets students rotate only if their school is on its current affiliate list.

Why Northern Virginia works for GW students
GW Nursing's admissions, student services and simulation center sit at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) in Ashburn. Around it lies the Virginia side of the Washington metro area, home to roughly 3.2 million of the region's 6.5 million residents in 2025 Census estimates, and with them a large share of the region's clinics and hospitals.
Licensing is also simpler than in the District. Virginia has been a Nurse Licensure Compact state since 2018, so a multistate license from any compact state already covers Virginia sites, while a nurse whose license comes from a non-compact state needs a Virginia license too. Inova: the affiliate list decides
Inova states its gate plainly. Its student clinicals page says a school must have a current affiliation agreement on file before any student rotates, and only students from schools on Inova's affiliate list, kept in InovaConnect behind an Inova login, may do clinical rotations there. That holds regardless of employment status, so working for Inova does not by itself open a student rotation.
Inova tells students to go through the clinical coordinator at their own school. GW lists Inova Health System among its organization partners, and GW's accelerated BSN students wear a red scrub top for Inova rotations, so the relationship exists at least for prelicensure students. Whether a graduate NP rotation fits under it is a question for GW's Clinical Placement Team, and it belongs early in your planning, since no hours count before the agreement is executed and you are cleared.
UVA Community Health and the ACEMAPP route
UVA Community Health runs UVA Prince William, UVA Haymarket, UVA Culpeper and the UVA Community Health Medical Groups. Its page on the ACEMAPP platform says it is currently accepting student rotation requests, including clinical rotations for advanced practice and other graduate students. A school not yet on ACEMAPP contacts ACEMAPP first; an affiliated school requests the rotation directly.
That makes UVA Community Health one of the few Northern Virginia systems with a published door for NP students, which suits students in Prince William County and the western suburbs. GW's public pages do not say whether GW is set up on ACEMAPP, so name the site early and let the Clinical Placement Team confirm the route.
Other systems in the region
Several well-known Northern Virginia names publish nothing for outside NP students. A missing public process usually means the route runs through a clinician who agrees to precept you and a site willing to sign GW's affiliation agreement.

How Virginia's NP law shapes your preceptor pool
AANP counts Virginia as a restricted-practice state. Under Va. Code § 54.1-2957, a nurse practitioner practices under a written or electronic practice agreement with at least one patient care team physician until reaching the equivalent of three years of full-time clinical experience. After that, the NP may practice without one. Every newer Northern Virginia NP therefore practices under a physician agreement, and many experienced ones still do.
Two things follow for your search. Physician-led practices are natural hosts, and GW's criteria accept MD and DO preceptors as readily as NPs. And GW's published preceptor criteria turn on license, role and two years of advanced practice, not on whether the NP has reached autonomous practice. Acute care rotations in Northern Virginia
For Adult-Gerontology Acute Care students, Northern Virginia is one of only three areas where GW allows clinicals, alongside DC and Maryland. GW's Bulletin says DNP and certificate acute care students must live in Maryland, Northern Virginia or the District while taking NURS 6235, NURS 6236 and NURS 6237, and the program director is closely involved in choosing sites. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide points these courses toward hospital medicine, telemetry and critical care settings.

How we search Northern Virginia for GW students
We map your course against practices and hospital clinics within a realistic drive of home, from Arlington and Alexandria out to Loudoun and Prince William, and we read each site's student gate before asking a preceptor to commit. Where Inova's affiliate rule or a platform such as ACEMAPP applies, your placement advisor gathers what GW's team needs to act on it. Virginia's Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program pays Virginia-licensed preceptors of students at Virginia public or private nonprofit nursing schools; whether GW Nursing counts is unconfirmed, so we present it to preceptors as an open question.

Questions GW students ask
I work at an Inova hospital. Can I do my GW clinicals there?
Inova's rule looks at your school, not your job: only students whose school is on Inova's current affiliate list may rotate there, regardless of employment status. GW lists Inova among its partners, but ask the Clinical Placement Team whether a graduate rotation fits, and see GW's guidance on clinicals at your workplace.
Which Northern Virginia systems publish a process for NP students?
As of September 2026, UVA Community Health takes advanced practice rotation requests through ACEMAPP, Inova admits students from affiliated schools, and MedStar takes graduate students who bring their own preceptor. VHC Health, HCA Virginia, Sentara Northern Virginia and Kaiser Permanente published no NP-student process that research could find.
Does the Virginia Board of Nursing have to approve GW before I train in Virginia?
The Virginia Board states that it does not regulate or approve out-of-state or post-licensure nursing education programs, so GW's NP clinicals in Virginia involve no Board filing. What each rotation does need is an executed affiliation agreement between GW Nursing and the site, plus your clearance from GW's Clinical Placement Team.
How far ahead should I approach Northern Virginia preceptors?
Earlier than feels necessary. GW warns that many preceptors and sites book up more than a year in advance, and its placement requests are due roughly four months before the term. Start your search two terms out if you can, and check your term's exact dates on the request deadlines page.
