GW online nursing for Kansas residents
Kansas asks nothing of GW before you enroll or start a rotation. The Board of Nursing reviews an outside APRN program only when a graduate applies for a Kansas APRN license, and it expects a Kansas-licensed APRN as preceptor. Check both points before your first clinical term.

Kansas checks the program when you apply for an APRN license
The Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN) sets no formal approval hurdle for online APRN programs from other states before Kansans enroll, and describes none for clinical placements, so there's no Kansas list for GW to appear on. The scrutiny arrives with your Kansas APRN application, when KSBN checks the program for:
- At least 3 credit hours apiece in pharmacology, pathophysiology and health assessment at the advanced level
- National accreditation, with 45 or more credit hours overall
- Clinical hours in your role and specialty: at least 500 if admitted before March 1, 2025, and at least 750 if admitted later
GW's disclosure page, in copies from October 2024 and January 2026, still rates Kansas as meeting requirements and may predate the Kansas change; KSBN's document is silent on DNP indirect hours. Get written answers from GW admissions or your program director; the clinical hours page shows GW's figures.
GW's NP tracks list 600 precepted clinical hours, fewer than the 750 Kansas checks for students admitted after March 1, 2025. Ask GW how that applies to you before you plan on a Kansas APRN license.
The Kansas preceptor KSBN has in mind
KSBN's out-of-state guidance pictures your Kansas preceptor this way: oriented to the program, signed on to an agreement, and licensed in Kansas as an APRN in your specialty under K.A.R. 60-17-104. It also ties the supervision of APRN students to that license. GW's list also names physicians, so if an MD or DO is your best lead, ask the Clinical Placement Team first.

Faculty rules are light: GW's online instructors need no Kansas license, and a GW faculty member who makes a site visit, usually in your second or final clinical course, comes as a visitor.
Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan
About 2.27 million people lived in the Kansas City metro in 2025, some 938,000 of them in Kansas. Wichita followed at roughly 664,000, Topeka near 233,000 and Manhattan around 136,000. Wesley Healthcare is an HCA hospital in Wichita, and students also approach Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail Health and The University of Kansas Health System. Any of them would need its own affiliation agreement with GW.
No Kansas preceptor incentive appears in state sources, so lead with what GW offers preceptors.
Your RN license at a Kansas site
Under K.S.A. 65-1124, an APRN student at a Kansas site practices on an RN license Kansas accepts, Kansas-only or multistate. Kansas entered the compact on July 1, 2019, after the January 2018 start shared by Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma, so a Kansas multistate license now covers both halves of the Kansas City metro; see GW's RN license rule. Kansas has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Questions GW students ask
Does GW need Kansas approval before I start clinicals?
No. KSBN sets no formal approval step for out-of-state online APRN programs, before enrollment or before placements. GW's own steps still come first: a Site Prospector submission, program director review, an executed affiliation agreement and Complio clearance, with hours counting from the start of the term after clearance.
Can a physician be my preceptor in Kansas?
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide accepts MDs and DOs. KSBN's out-of-state guidance, however, expects an APRN licensed in Kansas in the student's specialty and links supervision of APRN students to that license. Before asking a Kansas physician, check with GW's Clinical Placement Team how the Kansas expectation applies to your course.
I was admitted to a GW NP track after March 1, 2025. Can I get a Kansas APRN license?
That depends on how KSBN counts your hours. Its document looks for 750 role-specialty clinical hours from students admitted after that date, and GW's NP tracks list 600. GW's disclosures still show Kansas as meeting requirements. Put the question to GW admissions and to KSBN, and keep both answers in writing.
Can I cross into Missouri for a Kansas City rotation?
The license side works, since Missouri is also a compact state and your Kansas multistate license reaches it. Any Missouri requirement for out-of-state programs and the site's own agreement with GW still apply, and each site needs its own Site Prospector submission. See our Missouri guide for that state.
