GW Nursing clinicals for Illinois residents
Illinois residents can join every GW online nursing option except Acute Care, which requires living in the DC region. Because Illinois never adopted the Nurse Licensure Compact, rotations there need an Illinois RN license, and a state rule written for schools based elsewhere is worth putting in front of GW's team early.

Where Illinois fits on GW's state list
GW's State Authorizations page names no Illinois restriction. Read the midwifery line twice: GW's licensure disclosure has not reached a verdict for Illinois.

Illinois's rule for out-of-state programs
Section 1300.340(n) of Illinois's nursing rules (Title 68) asks a school from another state that wants Illinois placements to send the Board a packet: its home-state approval or accreditation, a letter setting out dates, facilities and units, the syllabus, the signed contract with each facility, and forms showing faculty and preceptor qualifications. An approval runs for two years, can be renewed, and brings annual reports.
Scope is the open question. Because the clause lives among the rules for approving RN programs, it is silent on whether a graduate school like GW must file at all. IDFPR's approved-program list, revised September 17, 2026, covers only Illinois schools, and a search of Board minutes found no GW approval. Any filing would be GW's to make, so raise it with the Clinical Placement Team before you lock in an Illinois site.
A neighboring clause, 1300.340(j), wants the preceptor on hand any time the student is caring for patients, and licensed as an RN wherever that care takes place.
Precepting in a reduced-practice state
AANP rates Illinois reduced. Depending on the setting, an Illinois NP may work under a written collaborative agreement with a physician, and some Schedule II and benzodiazepine prescribing depends on that agreement or on a consultative arrangement plus practice and CE requirements. GW's own preceptor requirements add two years in advanced practice.
Most students search the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro, where about 8.7 million Illinoisans live, then Peoria, Rockford and the roughly 670,000 Illinois residents counted in the St. Louis metro. Northwestern Medicine and UChicago Medicine anchor the list of large systems, alongside Endeavor Health, OSF HealthCare and Advocate Health Care.
Illinois rewards teaching with license credit: an Illinois APRN earns 10 hours of renewal CE for each APRN student taught across a full semester or quarter, up to 30 per renewal period, on paperwork from the student's school. The rule is not limited to Illinois schools, but GW's public pages are silent on issuing that paperwork, so a preceptor should ask GW.
An Illinois RN license, and no shortcut
Illinois has not joined the compact and has no bill pending to do so, which means a multistate license from Missouri, Indiana, Iowa or any member state carries no privilege here. GW clears a rotation only when you hold a license for the state where it happens, so an Illinois site needs an active Illinois license in Complio. The RN license guide explains GW's rule.
Illinois law exempts an out-of-state RN enrolled in a graduate nursing program "in this State" (225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10)). GW's program is based in Washington, DC, and GW asks for the license regardless, so plan on holding one. Questions GW students ask
Can I use a Missouri multistate license for GW clinicals in Illinois?
No. Illinois never joined the compact, which leaves a Missouri multistate license, or one from any member state, with no privilege to practice at an Illinois site. GW looks for an active Illinois RN license before it clears an Illinois rotation. A Missouri resident who trains on both sides of the river needs both licenses.
Is GW's nurse-midwifery program an option for Illinois residents?
GW's State Authorizations page doesn't bar Illinois applicants from midwifery, but GW's professional licensure disclosure lists Illinois as "not yet determined" for the MSN Nurse-Midwifery. GW has not confirmed that the curriculum meets Illinois licensure requirements. Because GW ties an online student's disclosure status to where they currently live, ask GW admissions for the current status before enrolling.
Can I take GW's Acute Care NP track while living in Chicago?
Not from Chicago. Every Adult-Gerontology Acute Care option keeps its clinicals in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia, and GW asks those students to live there, so an Illinois resident would have to relocate. The family, primary care and psychiatric tracks are the ones Illinois students finish close to home.
