Washington State clinicals for GW nursing students
Washington's nursing board has signed off on a long list of GW tracks for in-state clinical placements, and GW's licensure disclosures count Washington as meeting requirements. Two limits shape everything else: GW's State Authorizations page closes every Acute Care option to Washington applicants, and WABON's approvals cover students who actually live in Washington.

GW's Washington exclusion beside WABON's list
The Acute Care bar matches WABON's list, which carries no AGACNP entry, and GW's own rule keeping those clinicals in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. Midwifery is the gap to watch: GW accepts Washington applicants, yet WABON shows no GW midwifery entry, so ask the program before you plan 840 immersion hours in the state. GW's other limits are on the state authorizations page.

WAC 246-840-571 and the residents-only rule
Washington makes an out-of-state distance program earn WABON approval before its first student sets foot in a Washington clinical setting. WAC 246-840-571 asks the school to prove equivalence with Washington's own program standards, to supervise and evaluate its students while they are in the state, to hold national accreditation and to file a report every year. Faculty who teach ARNP practice there must hold Washington ARNP licensure.
Residence is the catch. WABON limits the placements it approves for out-of-state schools to Washington residents and treats anyone else as an exception, reviewed individually. If you live in Idaho or Oregon, a Washington site is a long shot.
Change may be coming. WABON opened rulemaking on its education rules, WAC 246-840-500 to -571, with a CR-101 notice dated December 5, 2025, and easing clinical placement barriers is part of the scope.
Who may precept an ARNP student here
Washington NPs carry the ARNP title and hold full practice authority in AANP's ranking. The education rules set two tests for whoever precepts an ARNP student. The first is licensure: ARNP, MD or DO, active and unencumbered, or another state's equivalent. The second is distance: no relatives and no personal friends. A coworker you socialize with may fail that second test even when GW's preceptor requirements are met.
Around Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, a metro of about 4.2 million, students look at UW Medicine, MultiCare, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and Providence, the Renton-headquartered system that includes Providence Swedish. PeaceHealth operates in Washington as well. Spokane-Spokane Valley and Kennewick-Richland are the other large metros, and roughly 545,000 Washingtonians live in the Vancouver portion of the Portland metro. None of these systems has an arrangement with GW.
The state preceptorship grant skips GW students
Washington also runs a student nurse preceptorship grant, created by the legislature and paid out by WABON each quarter; the Summer 2026 cycle closed September 15, 2026. ARNP, RN and LPN preceptors with at least twelve months of experience can claim it for every student they precept for 80 hours or more, capped at two students a term.
The catch is spelled out on WABON's page: students of out-of-state programs are excluded even if every hour is logged in Washington. A preceptor who takes a GW student can't claim it, so lead instead with GW's own offer, which includes Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library access and a guest-lecture opportunity.
Your license since Washington joined the compact
Washington is a newer compact member, with implementation dated January 31, 2024. A Washington resident can now hold one multistate RN license good for Washington sites and for compact neighbors such as Idaho and Montana, satisfying GW's check for a license wherever you rotate. Oregon never joined, so a Portland-side site means an Oregon license. The APRN Compact is not law in Washington. See RN license for clinicals.

Questions GW students ask
Can I enroll in GW's Acute Care NP program from Seattle?
No. GW's State Authorizations page excludes Washington applicants from the MSN, DNP and certificate AGACNP options, and WABON's list has no GW acute care track. GW's Acute Care students must also live in DC, Maryland or Virginia. Seattle-area applicants can weigh the AGPCNP, FNP or PMHNP tracks, all on WABON's list.
I live in Idaho. Can I do GW clinicals at a Spokane clinic?
Probably not. The placements WABON approves for schools outside Washington are meant for Washington residents, and anyone else needs an individual exception. You would also need a license that reaches Washington. Ask GW's Clinical Placement Team before contacting a Spokane preceptor, and keep an Idaho option in reserve.
Can my friend who is an ARNP precept me?
Not in Washington. The state's rules disqualify relatives and personal friends from precepting ARNP students. Choose someone whose connection to you is purely professional, and confirm GW's own criteria, including the 2021 guide's two years of advanced practice.
Is GW's Nurse-Midwifery program approved for Washington clinicals?
WABON's list dated September 21, 2026 shows no GW midwifery track. GW's disclosures do rate Washington as meeting requirements for midwifery, and GW takes Washington applicants, so ask the midwifery faculty and the Clinical Placement Team how Washington immersion hours would work before you commit.
