Oregon residents in GW's online nursing programs
The School of Nursing's current State Authorizations page leaves Oregon off its limits, and Oregon's nursing board requires no approval or notice from APRN programs based in other states. Planning centers on the license instead: Oregon remains outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so an Oregon license covers Oregon and nowhere else.

Oregon on GW's lists, old and new
You may still meet Oregon on an older GW list. The Nursing tab of the provost's state authorizations page warns residents of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, Oregon or Tennessee that not every program may be open to them, wording that already sat on a GW page in 2017. The School of Nursing's own page is the current word and names no Oregon limit, and GW's disclosures rate Oregon as meeting requirements for the NP tracks and midwifery. No OSBN approval step for APRN programs
Oregon changed course in 2021. A former OSBN rule made NP students from graduate schools outside Oregon get Board authorization before any clinical practicum in the state. It was repealed effective July 1, 2021, so advice written before then may be stale.
Today only pre-licensure PN and RN programs from other states owe OSBN a notice, one form per track, renewed yearly, before learning activities start. Advanced practice programs and programs not leading to licensure are exempt, according to OSBN, and the Board's APRN FAQ gives a flat "No" to the question of whether it must approve out-of-state APRN placements.
Two related rules still apply. Anyone teaching in Oregon needs an active Oregon nursing license, and a school enrolling Oregonians must first meet either the state's Higher Education Coordinating Commission or NC-SARA. GW is an NC-SARA participant.
Preceptors from Portland to Bend
AANP rates Oregon full practice, so an NP can precept you on the strength of their own license. GW's criteria for who qualifies are on the preceptor requirements page.
Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro is where most searches begin; roughly 2 million of its 2.5 million residents live on the Oregon side, and OHSU, Legacy Health, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Providence Oregon all operate there. Salem, Eugene-Springfield and Bend follow in size, and Samaritan Health Services is another Oregon system. Consider them search territory; none has an arrangement with GW.
Licensing when your metro crosses into Washington
Oregon is not a compact member and has no compact bill pending, so your Oregon RN license is single-state. It covers any Oregon site, which satisfies GW's requirement of a license in each state where you train. The APRN Compact hasn't been enacted in Oregon.
The complication is the metro itself. About 545,000 people in the Portland metro live in Washington, and a Vancouver-area site would need a Washington license on top of yours. Washington's board also limits approved out-of-state placements to people who live in Washington, weighing any exception individually. Questions GW students ask
Does Oregon's nursing board have to approve GW before my NP rotation?
No. When OSBN's APRN FAQ takes up that question, the answer is a plain no, and the rule that once required Board authorization for visiting NP students was repealed on July 1, 2021. GW's Clinical Placement Team still clears your site, including anything the site itself requires.
Why does a GW page say Oregon residents may not have every program?
That sentence lives on the provost's state authorizations page and dates back at least to 2017. The School of Nursing's current State Authorizations page lists no Oregon limit. Treat the nursing page as current, and confirm your program with GW admissions before you apply.
Can I train at a clinic in Vancouver, Washington, while living in Portland?
It is an uphill path. You would need a Washington RN license in addition to your Oregon one, and Washington's board reserves approved out-of-state placements for its own residents, granting exceptions only individually. An Oregon site is usually the cleaner choice.
Can an Oregon resident hold a multistate license?
No. Multistate licenses are issued by compact states to their residents, and Oregon is not a member. Your Oregon license covers Oregon, and a rotation anywhere else needs a license from that state. GW looks for a license in every state where you rotate before it clears you.
