Idaho and GW nurse practitioner clinicals
Idaho is open ground for GW Nursing. No GW state list reviewed for this guide, from 2017 through 2026, has ever restricted Idaho, and GW's disclosures rate the state as meeting requirements for every NP track and midwifery. Idaho's own rules let a licensed RN in an accredited APRN program practice as that curriculum requires.

What Idaho residents can enroll in
The Acute Care row is the one place an Idahoan is turned away, and it comes from GW's residency rule for that track rather than any Idaho concern. GW's pages have disagreed with each other about restricted states over the years, so treat the School of Nursing's state authorizations page as current and let GW admissions confirm your program.

Idaho's board and schools based elsewhere
Idaho's statute and rules on program approval deal with schools operating inside Idaho; about clinical rotations run by schools from elsewhere they say nothing specific. For out-of-state and online programs, the Board's site offers only an email route to Idaho DOPL, the licensing division that houses the Board.
Two provisions help you. A Board rule lets an RN with a current Idaho license or compact privilege, enrolled in a nationally accredited APRN program, carry out the APRN work that curriculum builds in. Idaho Code 54-1412 adds a licensure exemption for students of approved programs doing tasks tied to their formal instruction. Whether any Idaho step applies to your site is decided by the Clinical Placement Team during clearance.
Preceptor license levels under Idaho's 2024 policy
An April 2024 Board education policy sets a floor for preceptors in every kind of nursing program: their license must match or exceed the one the student is pursuing. For an NP student, that means an APRN or a physician, never an RN alone. GW's own list, NP, MD, DO or CNM with two years in advanced practice, fits inside that floor; see preceptor requirements.
The policy also expects Idaho licensure from faculty: an RN license for those teaching nursing courses, and an APRN license for anyone with primary charge of an APRN specialty course. Boise, Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane question
St. Luke's Health System and Saint Alphonsus Health System dominate the Boise City metro, which counted roughly 864,000 residents in 2025, and most Boise-area NP searches start with them. Kootenai Health anchors Coeur d'Alene in the north, and Idaho Falls and Twin Falls round out Idaho's metro list. Think of these as search areas; no system here has an arrangement with GW.
From Coeur d'Alene, a Spokane practice can look like the easy answer. Washington's board, though, ties its out-of-state approvals to Washington residency and weighs anyone else as an exception. The Washington guide walks through it.
Where an Idaho multistate license reaches
Idaho put the Nurse Licensure Compact into operation in January 2018. With Idaho as your primary residence, your multistate RN license works in Idaho and in compact states such as Utah and Montana, which covers GW's demand for a license in each rotation state. Questions GW students ask
Does Idaho require GW to get approval before my NP clinicals?
Idaho's approval rules cover programs offered in Idaho and include no specific provision on clinical placements by schools elsewhere. The Board sends questions about out-of-state and online programs to the licensing division by email. GW's Clinical Placement Team confirms any state requirement before clearing your site.
Can an experienced RN precept my GW clinical hours in Idaho?
Not for NP hours. Idaho's 2024 education policy requires preceptors licensed at or above the level you are preparing for, and GW's 2021 guide names NPs, MDs, DOs and CNMs with two years in advanced practice. An RN colleague can support your learning at a site but cannot serve as your preceptor.
I live in Coeur d'Alene. Can I use a Spokane clinic for GW clinicals?
It is a hurdle. Washington's board keeps its out-of-state approvals for people living in Washington and handles others one exception at a time, so an Idaho resident faces an extra step even with a license that reaches Washington. Ask GW's Clinical Placement Team before contacting a Spokane preceptor, and keep an Idaho site in view.
Is my Idaho multistate license valid for a rotation in Montana?
For licensing, yes. Montana's licensing page says a nurse holding a multistate privilege from another compact state needs no Montana license, and Montana's board says graduate programs need no approval for its clinicals. GW still reviews and clears the Montana site through its usual process.
