Texas residents and GW's online nursing programs
Texas is nowhere on GW's State Authorizations page, yet GW's licensure disclosures mark Texas "not yet determined" for every NP program and for midwifery. The one Texas rule aimed at schools from other states concerns pre-licensure programs, so your clinicals depend on your license, GW's review and a preceptor pool shaped by restricted practice.

What "not yet determined" means for Texas applicants
The phrase means GW has not concluded whether its licensure-track curricula meet Texas's educational requirements for licensure. It is not a ban: GW's online programs accept Texas applicants. It is a question to put to GW admissions before you enroll, especially since GW's disclosures follow an online student's current address.

The Texas BON rule you'll read about, and why it skips GW
Texas insists that a nursing school from another state earn its Board's approval before sending even one student into a Texas clinical, and NC-SARA membership doesn't excuse it. The Board's out-of-state guideline, number 3.1.3 in its May 1, 2026 revision, points that requirement at pre-licensure VN and RN programs: diploma, ADN, BSN and entry-level master's. Those schools need THECB or TWC clearance first, first-attempt NCLEX results of 80% or better, an application four or more months ahead, and, for SARA schools, a ceiling of 10 students per clinical agency.
GW's MSN, DNP and certificate programs are graduate programs for RNs, which the out-of-state approval rules leave out, so no Texas BON step stands between you and a Texas rotation. Chapter 219's APRN standards (22 TAC 219.10) bind the programs that ask Texas for approval, and a nationally accredited program is not among them.
Delegation, protocols and Texas preceptors
AANP counts Texas among its restricted states. Every Texas NP practices on a physician's delegation, under supervision, with written protocols that last a whole career, and Schedule II prescribing is limited by setting. Your Texas NP preceptor therefore brings a delegating physician into the picture, and GW's preceptor requirements let that physician precept you too.
Texas's preceptor incentives miss graduate students. The tuition exemption for clinical preceptors covers Texas RNs who teach in public undergraduate programs preparing students for a first RN license, and THECB's Nursing Shortage Reduction Program sends grants to Texas nursing programs, not to individual preceptors.
Two giant metros, Dallas-Fort Worth and greater Houston, each hold roughly 8 million people; the San Antonio and Austin areas come next at between 2.6 and 2.9 million apiece. Large systems include Baylor Scott & White and UT Southwestern, as well as Houston Methodist, Texas Health Resources and San Antonio's University Health.
Licensing, and the trips to Foggy Bottom
Texas has honored multistate licenses since January 19, 2018. If Texas is your primary state of residence, your multistate license covers Texas sites and those in other member states, Oklahoma and New Mexico among them, and GW wants proof in Complio for every state where you'd rotate (license rules).
Budget for travel as well. Most NP tracks bring you to GW in person: CLASI during NURS 6222, OSCEs in the middle of the clinical sequence and a closing skills assessment. GW put its 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs in Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom, so price flights from Texas early. Dates are on the OSCE page.

Questions GW students ask
What happens if I move to Texas partway through a GW program?
GW has no published rule for students who relocate mid-program. Because its disclosures follow your current address, moving here puts you under Texas's "not yet determined" status, and you would need a license covering Texas plus new sites cleared through GW. Talk with your advisor and the Clinical Placement Team before you sign a lease.
Why isn't GW on the Texas BON's out-of-state program list?
Because that list is for pre-licensure schools the Board has cleared to hold clinical learning experiences in Texas. GW's MSN, DNP and certificate students are already RNs, and the out-of-state approval rules don't reach graduate programs, so the omission is expected and doesn't block a Texas rotation.
Who can precept a GW PMHNP student in Texas?
For most of the five PMHNP courses, GW's 2021 clinical placement guide lets any NP, physician (MD or DO) or CNM precept, given two years of advanced practice and a clean license. The final course, NURS 6248, is stricter and wants a psychiatric NP or CNS. Texas psychiatric NPs prescribe under physician delegation and protocols. The PMHNP program page lays out the five courses.
Can I use a Texas site another GW student used before?
It can be a strong lead. Ask the Clinical Placement Team for the Texas names on GW's record of past sites and preceptors. The preceptor still has to agree again, and each term needs its own Site Prospector submission. The clinical site database page explains the list.
