Studying with GW Nursing from New Mexico
New Mexicans can enroll in GW's online programs apart from Acute Care, and GW's disclosures say its NP and midwifery curricula meet New Mexico's requirements. The state lets NPs practice fully and belongs to the compact, but one Board rule asks programs whose New Mexico clinicals run past a single semester to seek approval, and that is the thing to raise early.

The more-than-one-semester rule
Under 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC, once a program's clinical or field experience in New Mexico stretches past a single semester, the program has to ask the Board to approve its clinical placements. Approval from a home-state board doesn't excuse it: that program must still clear New Mexico's minimum standards, found in 16.12.3.12.
Two parts of that are unsettled for you. The chapter is written for programs that prepare people to be licensed in New Mexico, and it never speaks to APRN programs on their own. And a GW NP's rotations usually span several terms: FNP students, for instance, move through NURS 6230, NURS 6231 and NURS 6232 in sequence. No public New Mexico list of approved outside programs surfaced in our research, so GW's status is unknown. Ask the Clinical Placement Team (sonclinical@gwu.edu) whether GW has applied or plans to, before you commit every clinical course to New Mexico sites.
Those rules also define who may precept: a nurse with at least two years on the job whose license sits at the student's target level or above. GW's preceptor requirements also ask for two years in advanced practice, so a seasoned New Mexico NP satisfies both.

Full practice and the New Mexico clinical landscape
AANP places New Mexico in its full practice category, the least restrictive of its three, so New Mexico NPs work without a required physician agreement. Independent NP practices are therefore realistic precepting sites for GW's family, primary care and psychiatric tracks, provided the setting fits your course.
Albuquerque dominates, with about 925,000 people in its metro; Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington are the next largest. UNM Health, home to New Mexico's lone academic medical center, shares the field with Presbyterian, Lovelace and Santa Fe's CHRISTUS St. Vincent. No state preceptor tax credit or stipend showed up for New Mexico.
License and travel from New Mexico
Compact membership dates to January 19, 2018, and New Mexico's Board hands out multistate licenses to residents. With New Mexico as your home state, one multistate license covers New Mexico sites plus those in Texas, Arizona, Colorado and other member states, and GW looks for each rotation state's license in Complio (RN license rules).
Expect a few trips east as an NP student: CLASI while you take NURS 6222, OSCEs during your second clinical course, held for 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP students at Ross Hall on the Foggy Bottom campus, and an end-of-program skills assessment. Questions GW students ask
Can I split my GW rotations between New Mexico and Texas?
Yes, as long as your license covers both states, which a New Mexico multistate license does, and each preceptor and site passes GW's review. Keep in mind that GW's Texas disclosure reads "not yet determined"; it turns on where you live, not where you train. The Texas guide explains it.
Is there an extra charge for a New Mexico multistate license?
Yes. Since June 1, 2026 the Board has billed a separate multistate compact license fee on top of the regular license. You need the multistate version only if you plan to rotate outside the state; a single-state New Mexico license handles in-state sites but not one in Texas or Colorado.
What if I move from New Mexico to Arizona during the program?
GW's page bars Arizona applicants from the leadership MSN, the MSN/MPH and every DNP option, and GW reads an online student's location from their current address. GW publishes no policy for enrolled students who move, so an Arizona move needs a conversation with GW first, especially for DNP students. See the Arizona guide.
Could a New Mexico physician precept me?
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide lists MDs and DOs alongside NPs and CNMs, each with two years in advanced practice. New Mexico's education rules describe preceptors as experienced nurses, though, so if a physician is your best option and GW's program falls under the state rule, ask GW how that plays out before you submit the site.
