Oklahoma clinicals for GW nurse practitioner students
Oklahomans can enroll in any GW online program outside Acute Care, and GW's disclosures say its NP and midwifery curricula meet Oklahoma's requirements. Oklahoma stands out for two reasons: its Board spells out exactly when a student from an out-of-state APRN program may train there, and it rewards APRN preceptors with a state income tax credit.

Oklahoma and GW's enrollment rules
Oklahoma never appears on GW's State Authorizations page, so the program you choose is the only variable.

Three conditions for out-of-state APRN students
Oklahoma demands prior Board permission only from out-of-state programs that lead to a first nursing license. Working RNs enrolled in an APRN program based elsewhere skip that request, but OAC 485:10-5-12(c) lets them train in Oklahoma only while all three of these hold:
- Your license reaches OklahomaYour RN license must be unencumbered and valid for Oklahoma practice. Holding a compact license from a different home state? Ask the Oklahoma Board of Nursing whether that privilege fits the rule's wording.
- GW's supervising faculty is licensed thereWhoever oversees the clinical component for GW needs a clean Oklahoma license at the level being taught or higher. That piece sits on GW's side, so raise it with the Clinical Placement Team when you propose an Oklahoma site.
- GW's curriculum meets Oklahoma's APRN standardsThe program itself has to satisfy the Board's education requirements for APRN programs.
No public roster shows which outside programs qualify, so check with GW before a preceptor blocks out time.
The preceptor tax credit, and who can use it
HB 3351, passed in 2024, created Oklahoma's Preceptor Tax Credit Program. Physicians, PAs and APRNs licensed in Oklahoma who provide primary care there can earn an income tax credit for teaching medical, PA or APRN students. Each rotation means 160 aggregate hours, the per-rotation credit for an APRN student climbs after the third, and the yearly cap is ten rotations per preceptor, awarded in order of application until the money runs out. Per the state Tax Commission, unused credit carries forward five years but is never refunded, and the program spans tax years 2026 to 2035.
Nothing in the program's published description confines it to students of Oklahoma schools, which makes it a useful point to raise when you ask a primary care NP or physician to take you on. Oklahoma's Health Care Workforce Training Commission administers the credit, reports that 2026 applications are open, and can confirm a preceptor's eligibility. Restricted practice and Oklahoma's clinical map
AANP ranks Oklahoma restricted. An Oklahoma NP cannot prescribe Schedule II drugs at all, and prescriptive authority depends on a written statement of physician supervision covering 6,240 hours. PMHNP students logging medication management should expect that line to show up in their cases; GW's preceptor requirements accept the supervising physician as a preceptor too.
Oklahoma City and Tulsa hold most of the state's people, with Lawton and Enid far smaller. Among the big systems, INTEGRIS Health and OU Health, the University of Oklahoma's academic arm, sit alongside SSM Health St. Anthony, Saint Francis and Hillcrest.
Licensing for Oklahoma rotations
Multistate licenses have come out of Oklahoma since January 19, 2018, the day the enhanced compact went live, and any member state's multistate license lets a nurse practice there with nothing more. The only wrinkle for a GW student is the 485:10-5-12(c) wording above. An Oklahoma resident's own multistate license settles it; a student licensed elsewhere should get the Board's answer first. Questions GW students ask
Can my Oklahoma preceptor be a physician assistant?
Not for GW. Oklahoma's credit does reward PAs who precept, but GW's 2021 clinical placement guide names only NPs, MDs, DOs and CNMs, each with two years in advanced practice. No GW source lists PAs. Current rules may differ, so ask your course faculty before approaching a PA.
Can I use a Texas multistate license for GW clinicals in Oklahoma?
Texas and Oklahoma both belong to the compact, so the license carries a privilege to practice in Oklahoma. Oklahoma's APRN-student rule speaks of a license to practice nursing in Oklahoma, so confirm with the Oklahoma Board that your privilege meets it. What does GW need from my Oklahoma preceptor?
One Site Prospector submission for each preceptor, site, rotation and term, with the preceptor's license and bio or CV attached. Can a rural Oklahoma clinic be my GW site?
Yes, if the preceptor meets GW's rules and the clinic signs GW's affiliation agreement. Rural primary care also fits Oklahoma's credit, which rewards primary care precepting anywhere in the state. Leave time: GW notes agreements can take weeks to months, and a small clinic may be signing its first one.
