Rhode Island: GW's open question, and how clinicals work there
GW's State Authorizations page puts no limit on Rhode Island residents beyond the Acute Care residency rule. GW's professional licensure disclosures are another matter: they file Rhode Island under "not yet determined" for all four programs they cover, the NP master's tracks, the NP doctorate, the NP certificates and midwifery. Settle that question with GW admissions first, then plan clinicals around Providence-area preceptors.

Two GW sources, read side by side
GW's admissions list and its licensure disclosures answer different questions. The State Authorizations page decides whether GW can take you as an applicant. The disclosures, hosted by GW Libraries, state whether a program satisfies a state's educational requirements for licensure, and for an online student GW measures that by current address.

Questions to settle before you enroll

- Check the address GW has on fileLocation for an online student means current address. Moving to Connecticut or Massachusetts, both listed as meeting requirements, would change which row applies to you.
Rhode Island's board and schools from other states
Rhode Island's Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education works under 216-RICR-40-05-3, a regulation about approving the state's own basic nursing programs. Nothing in it asks a program from another state to obtain Board approval before its students train at Rhode Island sites, and no roster of approved out-of-state programs turned up.
One clause is worth knowing. Agreements between Rhode Island programs and clinical agencies must show that the program takes part in the state's central registry for clinical placements, and the rule leaves open whether that reaches schools from elsewhere. If a site mentions it, forward that to GW's Clinical Placement Team with your affiliation agreement details.
Precepting and searching around Providence
In AANP's practice map, Rhode Island is full practice: a seasoned NP there needs no physician arrangement to see patients or to teach you. GW adds its own filter on credentials (NP, MD, DO or CNM), experience (two years of advanced practice at minimum) and licensure (current, with no encumbrances), as preceptor requirements explains.
The Providence-Warwick metro takes in about 1.1 million Rhode Islanders and spills over into Massachusetts. Care New England Health System, Brown University Health, CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island and South County Health are the main systems, and no Rhode Island incentive for preceptors surfaced in state sources.
Back in the compact since 2024
Rhode Island came back into the Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2024; the state health department dates it January 1 and NCSBN's table says January 8. A license issued to a qualified Rhode Island resident since then is multistate, good for Rhode Island sites and for Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Massachusetts is the gap: it has adopted the compact on paper only so far, so a practice across the Massachusetts line needs a Massachusetts license. See the Massachusetts guide.

Does "not yet determined" stop GW from admitting me from Rhode Island?
The admissions list on GW's State Authorizations page sets no Rhode Island limit beyond the Acute Care residency rule. "Not yet determined" is a licensure disclosure: GW has not said whether its programs meet Rhode Island's educational requirements for licensure. Admission and licensure are separate questions, so raise the second one with GW admissions before you enroll.
Can I do GW clinicals in Rhode Island while the disclosure is open?
Rhode Island's regulation has no approval step for schools based in other states, and GW's process runs the same way there: your preceptor goes into CORE via the Site Prospector, the program director weighs the fit, the agreement gets signed and Complio shows you compliant. The open disclosure is a licensure question for GW.
Which license covers a Connecticut rotation if I live in Rhode Island?
A Rhode Island multistate license, if you qualify for one as a resident, covers Connecticut sites, because Connecticut became a compact state in October 2025. It does not yet reach Massachusetts. GW will check that your license covers the rotation state before clearing you; see RN licenses for clinicals.
How often will I travel from Rhode Island to GW's campuses?
Three on-campus requirements shape an NP's calendar: CLASI, taken alongside NURS 6222; OSCEs, in the second clinical course; and a final skills assessment near graduation. GW's 2026-27 calendar puts FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs at Ross Hall, on the Foggy Bottom campus in DC, and gives PMHNP students a virtual CLASI. The OSCE page lists dates.
