Connecticut residents in GW's online nursing programs
Connecticut residents can apply to every GW online nursing option except Acute Care, and GW's licensure disclosures count Connecticut as a state where its NP and midwifery programs meet requirements. Connecticut has honored multistate licenses since October 1, 2025. Its education rules target licensure programs, so your real task is a preceptor who satisfies GW.

Which GW programs a Connecticut address opens
GW's State Authorizations page never mentions Connecticut. The one limit you meet is the Acute Care residency rule that covers everyone outside the Washington region.

What Connecticut's education rules actually reach
Under Regs. Conn. State Agencies 20-90-59, Connecticut accepts a nursing program from elsewhere without an approval step of its own, provided the home board has approved it, the curriculum satisfies Connecticut's RN rule and the home state's licensure standards match or exceed Connecticut's. Their scope, set in 20-90-46, is programs leading to licensure, and graduate or APRN programs such as GW's fall outside what they discuss.
Two sections still come up at Connecticut sites. Section 20-90-48 allows a preceptor no more than two students at the same time and requires written contracts with clinical agencies. Section 20-90-51(f) sets three conditions for anyone precepting advanced-level students: a current RN license (Connecticut's, or one from the state where the teaching is done), a nursing bachelor's degree, and two years' experience in the role. GW sets a higher bar for NP students: NPs, MDs, DOs and CNMs with two or more years in advanced practice. Contracts are the Clinical Placement Team's job through the affiliation agreement.
Preceptors under Connecticut's collaboration clause
AANP files Connecticut under full practice, but independence comes late: a new NP's first three years and 2,000 hours are spent in collaboration with a physician. GW judges eligibility by its own yardstick, two years or more in advanced practice and a current, unencumbered license, and the program director signs off on each preceptor.
The Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford area is the largest metro, at roughly 1.17 million residents; Waterbury-Shelton, New Haven and Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury complete the list. Students often start with Yale New Haven Health or Hartford HealthCare, then look at UConn Health, at Trinity Health Of New England and, out west, at Northwell's Danbury Hospital.
No Connecticut preceptor incentive turns up in the state's sources, so a preceptor's thanks come from GW: Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library access and a guest-lecture opportunity among them.
Your license now that Connecticut is a compact state
Connecticut joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on October 1, 2025. Connecticut's Department of Public Health accepts two licenses for an RN student training in the state: one it issued itself, or a multistate license issued by the compact state the student calls home. GW's license rule adds its own demand: a license for each state you rotate in.
Rhode Island belongs to the compact outright. Massachusetts voted the compact into law in November 2024, but implementation is still pending, with its board targeting May 2027, which means rotations in Worcester or Springfield still call for a Massachusetts license. New York stays outside the compact and wants out-of-state programs registered ahead of New York clinicals; the New York guide explains GW's condition for New Yorkers.
Stamford and Danbury are near the New York border. A practice on the far side answers to New York's rules, so keep the rotation in Connecticut.

Questions GW students ask
Does Connecticut require GW to file anything before my clinicals?
Nothing in Connecticut's regulations asks an out-of-state licensure program for a filing, and they are silent on graduate and APRN programs. What controls your first day is GW's sequence: program director review, a signed site agreement and clearance in Complio. Every clearance item is on the clearance page.
I live in Connecticut but hold a multistate license from another compact state. Is that enough?
It depends on where home is. The Department of Public Health accepts a multistate license from the student's compact home state. If Connecticut is now your primary residence, check with the Department about switching to a Connecticut license, and tell GW's Clinical Placement Team which one you plan to use.
Can my Connecticut employer be my GW clinical site?
Nothing on GW's current pages rules it in or out, and GW's compliance page even suggests networking with providers at your job. A 2017 GW FAQ, though, asked students to look outside their workplace. Ask your program director early; the workplace page has more.
Are DNP hours in Connecticut counted the same as MSN hours?
Precepted NP hours are 600 whichever degree you choose. The post-BSN DNP adds indirect hours, and GW's sources disagree: 600 direct plus 500 indirect in the 2026-27 Bulletin, 1,100 in total on the web page, 500 plus 500 in the 2025-26 Bulletin. Check DNP practice hours and confirm with your program.
