GW online nursing from Arkansas
Arkansans can join GW's online NP, leadership and DNP programs, and an Arkansas multistate license stretches to sites across the compact, the Oklahoma side of Fort Smith included. Two details deserve care: GW has not settled whether its midwifery program meets Arkansas's licensure requirements, and Arkansas NPs practice under a physician agreement.

What Arkansas asks of out-of-state programs
On paper, very little. We could not locate an Arkansas board rule, or any line of its web guidance, requiring a visiting school to get clearance before its students do clinical-only work in the state, and ASBN staff have not been asked to confirm. Part 125 of the state's nursing rules governs prelicensure education and touches schools from elsewhere only if they try to start a brand-new Arkansas program. Part 123, the APRN chapter, treats nationally accredited programs as meeting its standards, a status it calls "deemed".
One wrinkle is worth knowing. Arkansas's statutory shield for nursing students (A.C.A. ยง 17-87-103(2)) covers students of programs the ASBN approves, and no source shows GW among them. In Arkansas, then, your clinical hours rest on your own RN license, never on student status.
Arkansas NPs, physician agreements and where to look
AANP places Arkansas in its reduced group. Every Arkansas NP carries a regulated physician agreement that governs at least one piece of their practice, and certain drugs sit behind a physician protocol before an NP may prescribe them. That shapes what your preceptor prescribes, not whether they can teach you, and the physician on the other side of that agreement can precept a GW student as well (preceptor requirements).
Greater Little Rock, which takes in North Little Rock and Conway, is the biggest metro; the Fayetteville, Springdale and Rogers corridor comes second, and Fort Smith and Jonesboro follow. The main systems are UAMS Health, Arkansas Children's, CHI St. Vincent, Baptist Health and Mercy, whose Arkansas hospitals sit in Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas.
FNP students should think about Arkansas Children's and other pediatric practices early: GW's 2021 clinical placement guide pairs OB/GYN with pediatrics in the second FNP course. Confirm current settings on rotation settings by course. Our research found no Arkansas preceptor tax credit or stipend.
Licensing: compact since 2018
Arkansas has been a compact state since January 19, 2018, and the compact's text lives inside the Nurse Practice Act (Title 17, Chapter 87, Subchapter 6). If you call Arkansas home, one multistate license covers Arkansas sites and those in other member states, which matters around Fort Smith because part of that metro lies in Oklahoma. GW still wants each rotation state's license on file in Complio (RN license rules).
Two of Arkansas's neighbors, Louisiana and Mississippi, are on GW's list of states whose residents its online programs can't enroll. If a move south is possible during your program, read the Louisiana guide before you pack.

Questions GW students ask
What does "not yet determined" mean for Arkansas midwifery applicants?
It means GW has not concluded whether its MSN Nurse-Midwifery curriculum satisfies Arkansas's educational requirements for licensure. GW's disclosures judge an online student's state by current address, so an Arkansas resident should get GW admissions' current answer before enrolling. For every NP program, GW lists Arkansas as meeting requirements.
Can I train at an Oklahoma site on my Arkansas license?
If Arkansas is your primary state of residence and your license is multistate, yes: Oklahoma also belongs to the compact. Oklahoma adds its own conditions for RNs enrolled in APRN programs based elsewhere, one of them about faculty licensure, so read the Oklahoma guide before choosing a site across the line.
When should an Arkansas student start the preceptor search?
GW asks for placement requests about four months before the term and warns that many preceptors and sites book up more than a year ahead. In a smaller metro such as Jonesboro, treat a full year of lead time as the sensible target. GW's dates are on the deadlines page.
Does GW place Arkansas students itself?
In the NP tracks, the search is yours: GW's graduate students secure their own site and preceptor, apart from the Acute Care options, which aren't open from Arkansas anyway.
