GW's 2026 CORE workshop deck lays out the review behind every request. Each stage waits on the one before it, which is why a clean first submission matters most when time is short.

A clearance notice closes the process. The deck aims those notices at the final week before classes, and no hour counts until the term that follows clearance is underway. The clearance page explains what clearance requires.

Why a site GW already knows is faster

The affiliation agreement is usually the slowest stage. A contract written from scratch may need several weeks to a few months, by the estimate in GW's 2021 clinical placement guide; older GW documents said one to four months (2016) and as long as three months (2017).

An existing agreement shortens that path. Under the same guide, the Clinical Placement Team simply asks an already contracted site to confirm your rotation, with nothing to negotiate, and asks you to nudge the site if a week goes by in silence. With a new site, the team asks you to step in after three unanswered attempts within a month.

So in a rush, lean on sites that have hosted GW students, and when a new site says yes, have its signatory's name and email ready on day one. The guide wants the signer to be a different person from your preceptor, with an exception when the administrator owns the practice. The agreements page goes deeper.

The week-two line

The 2026 CORE workshop deck is direct: a site has to be locked in before the term's second week closes. Treat that as the last point on the calendar, not a target. Since clearance is timed for the days just before classes, a request still in review on opening day is already eating weeks you need for hours.

Every clinical hour also has to fall inside the semester dates. In a 240-hour course, starting two weeks late means the same hours spread over fewer weeks, and your preceptor's clinic days have to absorb the difference.

Stay out of the site until your clearance notification arrives. GW's 2021 guide treats entering a site before clearance as possible grounds for dismissal, and those hours do not count.

If you miss the date

GW states the consequence plainly: students who miss the request deadline face a delayed clinical start, and a late request may slow clearance. A delayed start can move the course itself, and in a plan of study where clinical courses run in consecutive terms, one moved course can push the ones behind it.

Mid-semester is the next marker. GW's 2021 guide has a student still without a site review the situation with the CEF and program director, who decide whether the course can realistically be finished this term. Questions GW students ask

How long does GW take to clear a clinical placement?

GW publishes no single figure. Each request moves through five checks, from the program director's review to site onboarding, and the contract step drags longest when a site has never signed with GW. Because clearance notices go out just before classes start, a complete request filed early is the best way to give every stage enough room.

Can I submit my CORE request after the deadline?

GW's materials describe consequences rather than a hard cutoff: a late request may delay clearance, and missing the deadline makes you subject to a delayed clinical start. Ask the Clinical Placement Team right away how a late submission will be handled for your term, and have a complete packet ready so nothing else adds delay.

Can I start clinical hours while my paperwork finishes?

No. Nothing you do before clearance counts, and even after it your hours begin with the term itself and must end inside its dates. Working at a site ahead of clearance could cost you your seat in the program, so spend the waiting days finishing Complio items and whatever onboarding the site asks for.

Is the Spring 2027 request date October 1 or October 8?

GW's website lists October 1 for spring terms, and the 2026 CORE workshop deck lists October 8, 2026 as the priority date for Spring 2027. The CORE Document Library posts the dates GW is actually using, so check there first and aim for the earlier date whenever you can.

Is a site that already takes GW students really faster?

Often, yes. When a site already has an affiliation agreement with GW, the Clinical Placement Team confirms the rotation instead of negotiating a new contract, which removes the slowest step. You still file your own Site Prospector submission for that preceptor and term, and the program director still reviews the fit.
