When a missing preceptor pushes your GW graduation back
A lost clinical term rarely costs only one term, because GW's plans of study run their clinical courses in a fixed order. Recovery has three parts: confirm the new sequence with your program director, check it against the Bulletin's time limit, and secure preceptors for your next two courses at once so the delay stops where it started.

How one late course moves the rest
GW's NP plans of study work like a row of dominoes. The first piece is NURS 6222, the advanced health assessment course, which the Bulletin names as the prerequisite for every other clinical NURS course and which each plan schedules one semester ahead of clinicals. The 6222 and CLASI page covers that gateway.
The precepted courses follow in order. In the FNP track that is NURS 6230 (120 hours), then NURS 6231 (240), then NURS 6232 (240), in consecutive terms in GW's November 2024 plans. If the first slips a term because no site cleared, the two behind it can slip as well, and your conferral date moves with them.

The time limits in GW's Bulletin
GW caps how long a program can take. The regulations in the Bulletin 2026-27 set these limits, and failing to finish within them is listed among GW Nursing's conditions for dismissal.

Set the limit beside your plan. A part-time MSN planned at eight semesters has room to absorb a lost term; a certificate planned at three semesters against a four-semester limit has almost none. Two things stop the count: an approved leave of absence and military deployment. Your academic advisor can confirm how many semesters you have used so far.
Stay enrolled while you regroup
A term without a clinical course is not a term off. The Bulletin requires continuous enrollment every semester, summer included, until your degree is conferred, and a student who breaks enrollment without an approved leave has to apply for readmission.
If you need to pause, a leave of absence is capped at one calendar year and its forms are due before the first day of the term. Leave time stays off your time-limit clock. One catch matters for clinical students: returning in a term when your required course is not offered lands you on administrative leave, under the Bulletin, so time any return to when your next clinical course actually runs. Plan the next term now
The delay almost always started with timing, so fix the timing first. GW's clinical page says a lot of practices commit to students over a year in advance, while your request is due three to four months before the term, as the request deadlines page shows. The search for your next clinical course belongs in the term you are finishing now.
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide says requests cannot be processed more than six months before a summer or fall first clinical course. That makes the months before your request date the time to have a preceptor confirmed, documents collected and your Site Prospector submission ready the day it can go in.

Questions GW students ask
Does a delayed clinical start mean I will graduate late?
Not always. GW's plans run clinical courses in consecutive terms, so when one starts late the others tend to follow, but whether your conferral date moves depends on your plan and on which courses run in which terms. Your program director can map the new sequence and tell you where it lands.
How long do I have to finish a GW MSN?
The Bulletin 2026-27 allows 13 semesters for the MSN, apart from the Direct-Entry MSN, which has its own shorter limit. Semesters on an approved leave or on military deployment do not use up that allowance. Finishing past the limit appears among GW Nursing's grounds for dismissal, so keep your program director informed if delays stack up.
Can I take a leave of absence while I look for a preceptor?
A leave exists for that kind of pause, but it has conditions: it is capped at one calendar year, the petition and forms go in before the term starts, and you register for leave every term you are out. Those leave semesters sit outside your program's time limit. Ask your academic advisor whether leave or continuous enrollment fits your case.
When should I start looking for my next preceptor after a delay?
Right away. Plenty of practices fill student slots more than twelve months out, by GW's own account, and each request is due roughly a season before its term. Starting the next search while you finish the current course puts a confirmed preceptor and a complete packet in your hands before the date, not after it.
Does GW's time limit pause while I wait for a site?
GW's time limits pause for just two reasons: an approved leave and military deployment. Semesters you spend enrolled while waiting on a site still count, which is why a program with a thin margin, such as a post-master's certificate, needs its next preceptor secured early.
