GW nursing students training in Montana
Montana asks relatively little of a GW online student. GW sets no Montana limit, its disclosures rate Montana as meeting requirements, and the Montana Board of Nursing's FAQ exempts graduate programs from Board approval for clinicals. The Board's one expectation is that anyone caring for Montana patients holds a license valid in Montana.

Montana applicants and GW's programs
Montana has never shown up on GW's restricted lists, old or new, and the Acute Care row reflects GW's rule that those clinicals stay in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. Certificate students should note the early start: with rotations often beginning in the first semester, a Montana search has to begin at acceptance. Montana's approval rule stops at pre-licensure
Montana does run an approval gate, ARM 24.159.608, but it guards against pre-licensure students arriving from other states. Before one of them enters a Montana clinical setting, the sending program files a signed request packed with accreditation and approval evidence, preceptor and faculty credentials, a supervision plan, the facility agreement and assurances from Montana schools that local students keep their spots.
None of it applies to you. Graduate and RN-to-BSN programs, per the Board's FAQ, may run Montana clinicals with no Board sign-off at all. The lighter duty that remains: your program checks that your license is active and valid in Montana. Out-of-state faculty need Montana licensure only when they deliver hands-on patient care; consulting with you and your preceptor does not trigger it.
Precepting across a state of small metros
AANP rates Montana full practice, so NPs precept on their own authority alongside physicians and CNMs; GW's criteria are on the preceptor requirements page. Not one Montana metro reached 200,000 people in 2025. Billings led at about 194,000, with Bozeman, Missoula and Helena behind it.
Billings Clinic and Logan Health now operate as one combined system. Benefis Health System is another major name, Providence Montana runs St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, and Intermountain Health owns St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings. These are search starting points, not GW partners. With fewer large practices per town, each refusal costs more, and GW cautions that preceptors and sites often fill their calendars over a year ahead, so start early.
A multistate license works in Montana
Montana has been in the Nurse Licensure Compact since early 2018, and its RN licensing page is explicit that a nurse working on another compact state's multistate privilege can practice in Montana without a Montana license. A Montana resident's multistate license, or one issued by Idaho or Washington, therefore satisfies the Board and GW's rule of a license for every rotation state. Planning trips east around Montana rotations
Expect a few trips out of Montana: CLASI comes during NURS 6222, OSCEs fall in your second clinical course and a final skills assessment closes the program, with GW's 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs set at Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom. PMHNP students attend CLASI virtually. Share those dates with a preceptor at the first conversation so a long trip never collides with clinical days; the OSCEs page lists them.

Questions GW students ask
Is Montana board approval needed before GW can place me there?
No. Graduate programs sit outside Montana's approval rule, which is aimed at pre-licensure students from other states, and the Board's FAQ confirms it. GW still has to confirm your license is valid in Montana, and GW clears every site on its own terms.
Do my GW faculty need a Montana nursing license?
Only faculty who give hands-on care to Montana patients. The Board's FAQ exempts out-of-state instructors whose role is consulting with you and your preceptor. Whether GW's faculty visits happen virtually or in person is not public, so ask your Clinical Experience Faculty how they will check in.
What can I offer a Montana clinician who agrees to precept me?
GW's Become a Preceptor page promises its preceptors use of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, the option of giving a guest lecture at GW Nursing on their specialty and contact with GW's wider preceptor group. GW's faculty-recruiting page adds that it wants remote preceptors in most states, so a Montana clinician is the kind GW seeks.
Can I start my Montana hours as soon as my preceptor says yes?
No. Hours count only once the term following your clearance notification begins, and none may fall outside semester dates. Program director review, the site's agreement with GW and your Complio file all come first, so a Montana preceptor's yes begins the process rather than the rotation.
