Training in Michigan as a GW nursing student
Nothing on GW's State Authorizations page limits Michigan applicants, and GW's disclosures list Michigan as meeting requirements for every licensure program they cover, midwifery included. GW programs and a Michigan address
Michigan earns a clean "meets requirements" in each of GW's nursing licensure disclosures. The only program closed to a Michigan resident is Acute Care, for a residency reason rather than a Michigan one.

Does Michigan regulate out-of-state programs' clinicals?
Our research turned up no Michigan requirement for approval or notice. The Board's program rules, which begin at R 338.10301 in the Michigan Administrative Code, and the Board's education-programs web page both speak to schools located inside Michigan. For licensure, Michigan judges an out-of-state school by its ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation, not by Board approval. That reading comes from the published rules; the Board itself was not asked.
In practice, the gatekeeping for a Michigan site runs through GW: a Site Prospector entry for each preceptor and site, program director review, then a signed agreement. GW warns agreements can take weeks to months, which is why the affiliation agreements page is worth reading before you ask a large system to sign.
Michigan preceptors: restricted practice and state certification
AANP classes Michigan as restricted: controlled-substance prescribing by a Michigan NP happens only under a physician's delegation. That shapes how your preceptor prescribes, not whether they can teach you, and it is worth asking about in settings where controlled substances come up often.
Michigan's NP, CNM, CRNA and CNS specialty certification demands two things at once: a live Michigan RN license and board-recognized national certification in the role. That gives you a quick credential check: a Michigan NP preceptor's license record should show the specialty certification. GW's preceptor requirements separately ask for two years in advanced practice.
NP students look across Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, the largest metro, then Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint. University of Michigan Health (Michigan Medicine) shares the field with Corewell, Henry Ford, McLaren and Trinity Health Michigan.
Getting the Michigan RN license in place
- Accept that a compact license won't reach MichiganMichigan has a compact bill pending (HB 4246) but has not joined, so an Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin multistate license gives no privilege at a Michigan site. GW looks for a license in each state where you rotate.
- Finish Michigan's licensing extrasBeyond the usual application, Michigan asks every new RN licensee for a criminal background check, one-time human-trafficking awareness training, and two hours on implicit bias completed within five years of issuance.

Questions GW students ask
Does Michigan pay clinicians who precept NP students?
Not at present. Michigan tried it once: a pilot from the state health department's nursing office and Michigan State's College of Nursing paid MSU's own FNP and PMHNP preceptors according to how many clinical hours they signed up for across two terms. It is finished, it never covered other schools, and Michigan has no preceptor tax credit we could find. Could my preceptor in Michigan be a physician?
It can. MDs and DOs sit alongside NPs and CNMs in GW's 2021 clinical placement guide, each with two or more years in advanced practice and an unencumbered license, while PMHNP NURS 6248 narrows the field to a PMHNP or CNS. Physician assistants do not appear on GW's list. Your course faculty can confirm whether the current rules still read that way.
Can I do GW clinicals at the Michigan hospital where I work?
Possibly. GW's current pages carry no explicit workplace rule, and its compliance page even suggests networking with providers where you work. A 2017 GW FAQ asked students to look outside their employer and check with an adviser. Ask your program director before you build a plan around your own unit, and see clinicals at your workplace.
Is GW's nurse-midwifery program open to Michigan residents?
Yes. GW's disclosure lists Michigan as meeting requirements for the MSN Nurse-Midwifery, and the State Authorizations page sets no Michigan limit. The 840 clinical hours run through two immersion courses, and GW warns that many sites book up more than a year ahead, so start early. The nurse-midwifery program page has the sequence.
