Finding NP preceptors in Maryland
Maryland is the DMV jurisdiction where the big academic systems publish a route for NP students from other schools: Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Medical System both take requests once an agreement is in place. A compact license carries you across the state line, and a state tax credit gives some Maryland preceptors one more reason to say yes.

Licensing and law, briefly
Maryland joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2018, so a nurse whose multistate privilege comes from another compact state may work there under Maryland law. Maryland's practice act goes further for graduate students, exempting APRN students in accredited programs from licensure for the practice their program involves. GW applies its own bar regardless, clearing you only when your RN license reaches the rotation's state, so check yours before you commit to a Maryland site.
Maryland NPs practice independently once their mentorship period ends, so an established NP there precepts under no one else's authority. Research turned up nothing from the Maryland Board requiring schools based elsewhere to seek approval before placing students. Johns Hopkins: agreement first, then the request form
Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore publish a Clinical Student Request Form for advanced practice and graduate students. The instruction to non-employees comes in two steps: make sure a legal affiliation agreement exists between your school and Hopkins, then enter your details on the form. Hopkins asks nearby programs, including its own nursing school, the University of Maryland, Towson and Stevenson, not to use this form, so it serves schools from farther afield.
You will also need a JHED ID from Hopkins. Whether GW currently holds an agreement with Hopkins, and which route Hopkins expects GW to use, is not stated on GW's public pages, so raise both with the Clinical Placement Team when a Hopkins preceptor is in view. Sibley Memorial Hospital in DC belongs to Johns Hopkins Medicine too, but reportedly uses a different platform, as the DC preceptor guide explains.
UMMS: a page written for out-of-state students
The University of Maryland Medical System keeps a clinical placement page for nursing students from schools outside Maryland. For an APN placement, an out-of-state student completes a Smartsheet request; once your school coordinator approves an assigned UMMS facility, you finish that facility's paperwork before your start date.
- UMMC Downtown and Midtown: an Epic access request, a portfolio roster and a confidentiality agreement.
- UM St. Joseph: advanced practice rotation requests by email, giving the school, program, dates, hours and preceptor requirements up front.
- Across the system: a COVID vaccine is required, and a flu vaccine is required from October 1 through April 1.
Those system rules sit on top of GW's own Complio checklist, so a UMMS rotation can add items beyond what GW asks for.
Montgomery, Prince George's and the systems near DC
Many GW students in Maryland live in Montgomery or Prince George's County, nearer the District than Baltimore. The systems closest to them publish less, so a clinician who agrees to precept you is usually the way in.

The tax credit as part of your ask
Maryland lets a clinician who teaches NP students unpaid claim an income tax credit under Tax-General § 10-739, with conditions attached: three or more rotations in the tax year, each with at least 90 hours of community-based training, at a site in a designated shortage or underserved area or a rural location. The amount is fixed per rotation, with an annual ceiling for each preceptor and for the state as a whole.
Your school does not have to be in Maryland. The statute looks for a program the Board of Nursing recognizes, and the health department's criteria send out-of-state NP programs to the Board's own list, whose 2016 version includes GW's family and adult-gerontology primary care tracks but leaves out acute care, psychiatric mental health and the DNP. Acute care students in Maryland
Acute care is the GW track most tied to this region: its students may train in Maryland, the District or Northern Virginia and nowhere else. The Bulletin frames site choice as a joint decision between you and the program director, while other GW pages give the director the lead, so settle the process with your program early. The DNP and certificate Bulletin pages also expect you to live in the region while enrolled in the three acute care clinical courses.
Hopkins and UMMS each describe how advanced practice students from other schools can request a spot, which puts Baltimore's hospitals in play once agreements exist, and students in the DC suburbs often weigh District hospitals too. Questions GW students ask
Can I use the Johns Hopkins clinical student request form as a GW student?
The form is meant for non-employees whose school has a legal affiliation agreement with Hopkins, and Hopkins steers its local partner programs to other channels. GW's public pages say nothing about a Hopkins agreement or which route applies to GW, so confirm both with GW's Clinical Placement Team before you or your preceptor file anything.
Do I need a separate Maryland RN license for a Maryland rotation?
Not if you hold a multistate license issued by the compact state where you live, since Maryland honors multistate privileges. A single-state license from a non-compact jurisdiction, the District included, stops at the Maryland line, so you would need a Maryland license. GW looks for a license that reaches the site's state before it clears you.
Does Maryland require GW to register before I do clinicals there?
Nothing from the Maryland Board of Nursing requiring schools from elsewhere to get sign-off before clinicals was found. On the education side, Maryland makes out-of-state institutions register before enrolling its residents online, with an exemption for schools in SARA, which GW participates in. What each site does need is an executed affiliation agreement with GW Nursing.
When do Maryland preceptors apply for the tax credit?
Once a year, for the prior tax year. For tax year 2025, the health department's application cycle opened December 1, 2025 and closed January 5, 2026. Your preceptor applies, not you, and the statute is currently set to run until June 30, 2030. Qualifying depends on the rotation, the practice location and your track.
