Alabama: the state every GW source agrees on
GW Nursing's State Authorizations page says its online programs cannot accept applicants from Alabama because of clinical placement restrictions, and every other GW page that mentions the state points the same way. GW's online programs and Alabama residents
Alabama has sat on GW's restricted list since at least 2017. Today's State Authorizations page groups it with Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota and Wisconsin, GW's nursing FAQ names it too, and a March 2025 version of the page steered Alabama applicants toward the on-campus BSN in Virginia.

What Alabama asks of nursing schools based elsewhere
Under rule 610-X-3-.09 of the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN), a pre-licensure or advanced practice program headquartered outside Alabama needs Board approval before its students start clinical learning anywhere in the state.
What the ABN expects from the school
- A letter of intent and approval documents, on file at least 15 days ahead
- Every student's name alongside an Alabama or multistate RN license number
- Who supervises clinically, that person's license number, and which facility hosts the student
- Sign-off from the host facility's chief nursing officer or nursing director
- A yearly out-of-state program charge, tied to the calendar year and nonrefundable
The ABN says students may not attend Alabama clinicals without that approval and payment. It posts forms, not a roster of approved schools. Out-of-state faculty who teach there beyond 30 days in a year must be licensed in Alabama or hold a multistate license.
Alabama practice, preceptors and the state tax credit
On AANP's map Alabama is a reduced-practice state: each NP works under a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician, and two boards, Nursing and Medical Examiners, share oversight.
Alabama's preceptor tax credit, known as APTIP, lowers state income tax for unpaid preceptors teaching in underserved rural communities, counted per 160-hour rotation and capped at 12 rotations a year. It began with tax year 2024, is set to end on September 29, 2031, and is administered through Alabama's statewide AHEC office. The credit applies only when the student's school is physically in Alabama, which leaves out GW and every other out-of-state school.
Birmingham, home to about 1.2 million people and UAB Medicine, is the largest metro. Huntsville has Huntsville Hospital's system, Mobile has both Infirmary Health and the USA Health academic system, and Montgomery has Baptist Health.
Moving into or out of Alabama during a GW program
GW words its limits around applicants and publishes no rule for an enrolled student who relocates to a restricted state. Its disclosure pages do define location: for online students it is the current address. So a move to Birmingham or Mobile changes your governing state, and GW should hear about it before you sign a lease.
Alabama joined the implemented compact states on January 1, 2020, and the ABN wants post-licensure students training there to hold either an Alabama license or a multistate one issued by another compact member. Questions GW students ask
Can I live in Georgia or Florida and do GW clinicals at an Alabama site?
That route runs into Alabama's approval rule: GW would need ABN approval and the annual charge before your first shift, and GW's disclosures already mark Alabama as not meeting requirements. Ask GW's Clinical Placement Team before contacting any Alabama preceptor or practice.
Would my preceptor earn Alabama's tax credit for teaching me?
No. APTIP rewards only rotations that support schools located inside Alabama. A preceptor supervising a student from GW, or from any school based outside the state, would not earn the credit for that rotation. Alabama built the credit around its own schools.
What does "does not meet" on GW's disclosure mean for an Alabama resident?
GW's professional licensure disclosures state whether a program meets a state's educational requirements for licensure. Alabama is the only state marked "does not meet" on all four NP and midwifery disclosures. If you intend to practice in Alabama after graduating, raise that line with GW admissions before you apply anywhere.
I'm a current GW student and may move to Alabama. What should I do first?
Talk to GW before you commit. Its state limits cover applicants and say nothing about enrolled students, yet its disclosures place an online student in whatever state they currently live in.
