GW Nursing clinicals in Georgia
Georgians can join GW Nursing's online programs other than the Acute Care NP options, and the Georgia Board of Nursing neither approves nor regulates post-licensure programs. Its attention goes to licenses instead: yours, your faculty's and your preceptor's must reach Georgia, and the Board expects APRN clinical teaching from a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization.

What GW's state list means in Georgia
Georgia appears on no restriction line of GW's State Authorizations page. In GW's licensure disclosures, Georgia is a meets-requirements state for the MSN NP tracks, the post-BSN DNP, the NP certificates and Nurse-Midwifery. Because GW's FAQ and a provost page carry shorter or older lists, the State Authorizations page is the one to trust, and GW admissions is where to confirm.

The Georgia Board's rules for students from other states
The Board's nursing education page covers four points that shape a GW rotation in Georgia:
- No program approval. Post-licensure programs, APRN programs included, sit outside the Board's approval and regulation, so an out-of-state MSN or DNP needs no Board sign-off to place you in Georgia.
- Your license. If you live in Georgia and train there through a school based elsewhere, your RN credential has to be either Georgia-issued or a multistate license from some other compact member. Georgia joined the compact in its January 19, 2018 group; see RN licenses for GW clinicals.
- Your teachers' licenses. Faculty and preceptors who teach in Georgia, in person or electronically, are held to that same licensure rule.
- Georgia APRN authorization. In graduate APRN education, the Board expects the person teaching you clinically to be a nurse whom Georgia has authorized as an APRN.
That last point deserves attention when you pick a preceptor. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide accepts NP, MD, DO and CNM preceptors, while the Board's wording points to a Georgia-authorized APRN. Where Georgia NP students search
AANP rates Georgia restricted. NPs there work through physician delegation or supervision, with narrower authority over Schedule II drugs. Metro Atlanta, home to about 6.5 million people, holds most of the big systems students approach, among them Wellstar Health System, Piedmont Healthcare, Grady Health System, Northside Hospital and Emory Healthcare.
Savannah, Augusta and Columbus are the next-largest metros, and two of them cross state lines. Augusta's reaches into South Carolina, where the out-of-state program rule covers pre-licensure schools only. Columbus's reaches into Alabama, which requires its board's approval before APRN clinicals and whose residents GW's online programs can't take because of clinical placement restrictions. PTIP: Georgia's preceptor credit, and GW rotations
Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program rewards licensed Georgia physicians, APRNs, PAs and dentists who teach without pay in community settings. According to Augusta University's AHEC, HB 144 revised and extended it, with an APRN credit per 160-hour rotation for up to ten rotations a year, a statewide annual cap and yearly registration starting in 2026.
Eligibility turns on the student: only students of Georgia's own medical, dental, NP and PA schools count, so a Georgia NP who precepts a GW student can't claim the credit. The state's pages also disagree. The Revenue Department's page still lists older tiered amounts that stop with tax years ending on or before the last day of 2026, and neither page states when the extended program ends.

Questions GW students ask
Can a physician precept me for GW clinicals in Georgia?
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide accepts MDs and DOs, but the Georgia Board wants APRN students taught clinically by a nurse carrying Georgia APRN authorization. Ask your program director how GW reads that rule before committing to a physician, and keep a Georgia NP preceptor as your first choice.
Does my preceptor need a Georgia license?
Yes, or a multistate license. The Board applies its licensure rule to preceptors and faculty who teach in Georgia, in person or electronically, and an RN credential issued multistate by a different compact member handles the RN half. The APRN authorization the Board mentions for clinical teaching is a Georgia one.
Do I need Georgia Board approval before GW can place me in an Atlanta clinic?
No Board step exists for graduate programs, because Georgia's Board does not approve or regulate post-licensure or APRN education. The Atlanta clinic still needs an affiliation agreement with GW, your program director must approve the site and preceptor, and the Clinical Placement Team must clear your Complio file.
I live near Columbus. Can my rotation be at a clinic on the Alabama side?
Plan against it. Alabama's board requires approval before APRN clinicals in the state, and GW's State Authorizations page says its online programs can't accept Alabama applicants because of clinical placement restrictions. A site on the Georgia side of the Columbus metro avoids the problem.
