Mississippi: GW's pages send mixed signals
GW's State Authorizations page is the one GW source that names Mississippi as a state its online programs cannot take applicants from. Its licensure disclosures list Mississippi as meeting requirements, and its FAQ leaves the state out. Four GW pages speak to state limits, and they line up differently on Mississippi. Read them side by side before you plan anything.

The disclosures answer a narrower question, whether a curriculum satisfies Mississippi's education requirements for licensure. The admissions limit is about clinical placement, and the State Authorizations page is the School of Nursing's own list. It covers every online program: the NP tracks, midwifery, the leadership MSN, the DNPs and the certificates. Acute Care is reserved for residents of DC, Maryland and Virginia regardless. IHL, not the nursing board, reviews Mississippi clinicals
Mississippi splits nursing oversight. Degree programs answer to the state's Institutions of Higher Learning board (IHL), and the Board of Nursing handles practical nursing programs. IHL holds out-of-state undergraduate and graduate programs with Mississippi clinicals to Mississippi's own standards, and it treats a practicum in the state as physical presence.
That triggers an IHL Nursing Education review lasting as long as three months, and IHL's procedures manual tells outside programs to ask for it no less than four months before they start. SARA membership, or a non-SARA authorization from MCCA, is required on top. IHL's roster of reviewed out-of-state programs, dated August 20, 2026, has no GW entry, while another Washington, DC university does appear.
Practice rules, systems and cities
Mississippi NPs practice within a board-approved collaborative relationship, which AANP counts as reduced practice. The collaborator can be a Mississippi-licensed physician or a Mississippi-licensed dentist. The state funds no preceptor incentive that we could find.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) anchors Jackson, the largest metro at about 610,000 people, with Gulfport-Biloxi second and Hattiesburg further down the list. Forrest Health is another large system, as are Singing River and North Mississippi Health Services. Baptist Memorial Health Care, headquartered in Memphis, operates Jackson's Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, and roughly 278,000 Mississippians live inside the Memphis metro.
Licenses for Mississippi and its neighbors
Compact licenses have worked in Mississippi since January 19, 2018. Per the Board of Nursing, good standing plus a declared primary residence in a compact state lets a nurse practice in other member states, and no employer may demand a separate license. IHL's standards expect APRN clinical students to be unencumbered RNs in the state that hosts the clinical.

GW's disclosures place online students at their present address, so a home on the Mississippi side of the Memphis metro counts as Mississippi.

GW's disclosure says Mississippi meets requirements. Can I enroll from Mississippi?
Not according to GW's State Authorizations page, which bars Mississippi applicants from every online program because of clinical placement restrictions. The disclosure addresses whether the curriculum meets licensure education requirements, which is a separate question from where GW can place students. Ask GW admissions to confirm before you apply.
Why doesn't GW's FAQ list Mississippi?
GW's nursing FAQ names only Alabama and Louisiana, then links to the State Authorizations page for the complete list. The FAQ reads as a shorter summary rather than a more current source. Plan around the State Authorizations page, and let GW admissions settle any doubt for your program and start term.
How long would an IHL review take if a school wanted Mississippi clinicals?
IHL puts the review at up to three months and wants programs based outside Mississippi to ask at least four months before they begin. The school files the request, not the student, and GW does not appear on IHL's August 2026 list of reviewed programs, so a Mississippi site would need that review before any GW student could start.
I'm a GW student moving to Jackson. What happens to my clinicals?
GW publishes no policy for enrolled students who move into a restricted state, but GW's disclosure index ties an online student's state to the address they live at now. Loop in the Clinical Placement Team and your program director before the move, since any Mississippi site would first need the IHL review described above.
