Doing GW nurse practitioner clinicals in Wyoming
GW's State Authorizations page puts no limit on Wyoming, so a Wyoming nurse can apply to every GW online program except the Acute Care options. Wyoming's Board of Nursing wants graduate programs from other states to send a written notice before any of their students begins a Wyoming clinical, backed by a signed contract with the site.

Wyoming and the GW program list
Wyoming is missing from every GW list of restricted states, and GW's licensure disclosures rate it as meeting requirements for all the NP programs they cover and for Nurse-Midwifery. Only Acute Care is closed, and for residency reasons.

Chapter 6: what Wyoming asks of a school based elsewhere
The Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN) splits out-of-state programs into two tiers in its Chapter 6 rules. LPN and RN schools preparing new nurses need the Board's permission. Graduate and other post-licensure programs, GW's tier, skip approval but owe Wyoming three things before a rotation:
- Authorization to operateNC-SARA participation, or else registration with Wyoming's Department of Education. GW appears in the NC-SARA directory as a participant.
- Written notice to WSBNA letter telling the Board that a GW student will train at a Wyoming site; WSBN even publishes a sample cover letter.
- A facility contract on fileA written contract signed with the Wyoming site before clinicals start, with a copy kept where the Board can ask for it.
All three sit with GW, not with you. The contract step overlaps GW's own affiliation agreement, and GW's 2021 clinical placement guide lists state requirements among its four clearance items, so the Clinical Placement Team is the one to confirm the notice for your term. Since this is notice rather than approval, Wyoming keeps no roster of approved graduate programs to check GW against.
Full practice in a state of small cities
AANP rates Wyoming full practice, so a seasoned Wyoming NP needs no physician partner to take you on. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide looks for two or more years of advanced practice in an NP, physician (MD or DO) or CNM; the preceptor requirements page has the rest.
Cheyenne, the biggest metro, had about 103,000 residents in 2025, Casper about 80,500 and Gillette roughly 48,000. Students tend to start with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center; in Casper, Banner Health runs Banner Wyoming Medical Center. Farther out are Campbell County Health in Gillette, the UCHealth-affiliated Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie and Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Each would need its own agreement with GW.
With no Wyoming preceptor tax credit or stipend on record, your ask rests on what GW gives preceptors: use of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, an invitation to guest lecture and contact with GW's wider preceptor group.
One compact license, and an APRN Compact two states short
Wyoming implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018. If you live in Wyoming, one multistate RN license covers Wyoming sites plus compact neighbors including Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nebraska and South Dakota, satisfying GW's rule that you hold a license wherever you rotate. Wyoming also put the APRN Compact into its statutes (Title 33, chapter 21). Utah, the two Dakotas and Delaware have done the same, but the compact needs seven states before it runs, so NP licensure after graduation remains one state at a time.

Questions GW students ask
Does Wyoming have to approve GW before I train there?
No. Post-licensure programs like GW's graduate tracks need no WSBN approval. Chapter 6 asks instead for NC-SARA participation or Department of Education registration, a written notice before your clinical and a signed facility contract. Those duties are GW's, and its Clinical Placement Team confirms them as part of your clearance.
Can I rotate across the line in Colorado while living in Wyoming?
License-wise, yes: Colorado is a compact state, so your Wyoming multistate license reaches it. Colorado handles out-of-state graduate programs under its own rules rather than Wyoming's notice system, and a Colorado site still needs its own GW agreement and Site Prospector submission. Can a Wyoming physician precept my GW clinical?
Yes, when the specialty fits your course. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide lists physicians (MD or DO) alongside NPs and CNMs, each with two advanced-practice years and a clean license. The last PMHNP clinical course, NURS 6248, is the exception, calling for a PMHNP or CNS. Check current rules in your course.
Does my Wyoming site need a copy of GW's notice to the Board?
Wyoming makes the notice and the contract the school's responsibility, and the Board may request the contract. Your site's part is signing GW's affiliation agreement. If a clinic manager asks about state paperwork, send them to GW's Clinical Placement Team at sonclinical@gwu.edu, which handles those questions for every state.
