GW Nursing clinicals in West Virginia
West Virginia residents can apply to GW Nursing's online programs other than the Acute Care NP options, which require living in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia during clinicals. The WV RN Board hands graduate-program questions to a separate higher-education agency, and that agency reviews a SARA school like GW only in narrow cases.

Which GW programs a West Virginia address opens
No line of GW's State Authorizations page restricts West Virginia, and every NP and midwifery disclosure GW publishes counts the state as one where its curriculum meets requirements. GW adds that state rules can change, so confirm your program with GW admissions before enrolling.

The Eastern Panhandle belongs to the Hagerstown-Martinsburg metro, which crosses into Maryland. Living on its West Virginia side still falls outside the Acute Care residency rule, so an AGACNP applicant there would need a Maryland, DC or Northern Virginia address for the clinical courses.
Who oversees a graduate rotation in West Virginia
Two state bodies come up, and only one of them touches GW's graduate programs. Pre-licensure schooling is the WV RN Board's territory; out-of-state schools of that kind file an application before using West Virginia facilities. For master's and doctoral programs, the Board points elsewhere: to the state's Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) and to the program's national accreditor.
Per the state's Office of Nursing Education and Workforce Development, a WVHEPC office, an out-of-state graduate or APRN program needs WVHEPC approval for clinicals here only when:
- its institution sits outside NC-SARA, or
- a single West Virginia facility hosts ten or more of its students.
The first trigger does not describe GW, which the NC-SARA directory lists as a participant. The second turns on how many GW students one facility hosts, a count GW keeps. Any state step that applies is folded into GW's clearance.
Reduced practice, and where preceptors practice
On AANP's practice map West Virginia is a reduced-practice state. A physician collaborative agreement covers an NP's first three years of prescribing, and Schedule II narcotic prescriptions are capped at three days' supply. A preceptor past that window, or a physician, fits the profile in GW's 2021 clinical placement guide: NP, MD, DO or CNM credentials plus at least two years of advanced practice. Students here tend to search around Marshall Health Network, WVU Medicine and Vandalia Health, the system that now includes CAMC, Mon Health and Davis Health. Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown and Martinsburg anchor the four largest metros. State sources list no West Virginia preceptor tax credit or stipend, so GW's own offer to preceptors, such as Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library access, is the benefit to mention when you ask.
Your RN license, and the short drive to GW's events
Residence decides which license works. The state's clinical rotation guide says graduate students training here need a West Virginia RN license if the state is their primary residence, or a multistate license if they live elsewhere. Since January 19, 2018, West Virginia has been a compact state, so a multistate license issued here reaches sites in Maryland and Virginia as well. Few states sit as close to GW's in-person events. CLASI comes while you take NURS 6222, and FNP and AGPCNP students return for OSCEs during their second clinical course; the 2026-27 OSCEs are at Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom, and other events use the VSTC simulation center in Ashburn. Can I live in West Virginia and enroll in GW's online FNP program?
Yes. West Virginia is not among the states GW's State Authorizations page restricts, and the MSN NP disclosure files it under meets requirements. You would log the 600 precepted hours with West Virginia preceptors. Confirm with GW admissions before you enroll.
Does the WV RN Board have to approve GW before my clinicals start?
The Board oversees pre-licensure schools and sends graduate programs to WVHEPC, which steps in only for a school outside NC-SARA or one with ten-plus students at one facility. GW participates in NC-SARA, and any remaining state step is handled inside GW's clearance by the Clinical Placement Team.
I live in Maryland but want a preceptor in Morgantown. Which license do I need?
If Maryland is your primary residence and you hold a Maryland multistate license, West Virginia's guidance accepts it for graduate clinicals, since Maryland and West Virginia are both compact members. GW asks for a license covering each rotation state, so upload that multistate license to Complio before clearance.
Is GW's AGACNP option open to someone living in West Virginia?
Not from a West Virginia address. All AGACNP options tie your home and your rotations to DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia while the clinical courses run, so a student in Martinsburg or Charleston would need to move first. The FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP tracks carry no such limit.
