North Carolina residents are eligible for GW Nursing's online programs, save the Acute Care NP options, and the state's Board of Nursing treats graduate programs as outside its reach. What remains is the practical work: a preceptor who fits your GW course, a license that covers the site, and GW's own approval chain.

GW's enrollment rules, read for North Carolina
Nothing on GW's State Authorizations page limits North Carolina applicants, and GW's professional licensure disclosures mark the state as meeting requirements for the NP tracks, the NP certificates and Nurse-Midwifery. Admissions is still the office to confirm your specific track with, since GW keeps its list under review as boards change their rules.

Why the NC Board of Nursing stays out of graduate clinicals
Rule 21 NCAC 36 .0233, the state's regulation for visiting programs, was drafted with unlicensed pre-licensure students in mind. It has the hosting North Carolina agency send the Board a request at least 30 days before the clinical, attaching the school's home-state approval and faculty credentials. NCBON's education FAQ then says plainly that master's and doctoral programs, in-state or out, are not programs it approves.
One Board contact can still apply to you. If your only nursing license comes from a state outside the compact, NCBON asks you to write to its Licensure Department, using the Email Us form, to learn the conditions for clinicals in North Carolina. NCBON also points out that the state's SARA membership began in June 2016 and that online students of a SARA-approved college can be eligible for placements here. GW is an NC-SARA participant.
Physician agreements and the preceptors you will meet
AANP places North Carolina in its restricted category. NPs there must keep a supervising physician agreement in place for as long as they practice, and a Joint Subcommittee of the nursing and medical boards oversees their licenses. Training beside a North Carolina NP shows you that arrangement up close, useful if you plan to stay after graduation. GW's bar for any preceptor is on the preceptor requirements page.
Students commonly begin with Atrium Health (now part of Advocate Health and based in Charlotte), Duke Health, UNC Health, Novant Health and ECU Health, then widen to independent practices. Population is concentrated in greater Charlotte and Raleigh, with the Greensboro and Winston-Salem metros next in size. State law records show no North Carolina tax incentive for preceptors, so bring what GW offers preceptors to the conversation.

Questions GW students ask
Does North Carolina require GW to be approved before my NP clinicals?
No Board approval applies. NCBON's out-of-state rule covers pre-licensure students, and the Board treats graduate programs from any state as outside its approval role. Before any hours, though, GW has to sign an agreement with the site, your program director has to accept the preceptor, and you need GW's clearance notice.
My RN license comes from a state outside the compact. Can I rotate in North Carolina?
Write to NCBON's Licensure Department through its Email Us form; the Board directs graduate students in your position to do exactly that. Separately, GW clears a rotation only when your license is valid in North Carolina, so resolve licensing before you enter the site in CORE.
Can I take a GW rotation across the line in South Carolina?
Often, yes. South Carolina's out-of-state rule targets pre-licensure schools, and both states are compact members, so a North Carolina multistate license reaches a site in the South Carolina part of greater Charlotte. Will a North Carolina preceptor get a tax break for teaching me?
North Carolina has no state preceptor incentive in current records. South Carolina and Georgia offer credits, but each limits them to students of its own schools. GW's thanks to its preceptors take the form of Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library access, a guest-lecture slot and ties with fellow preceptors.
