We found no New Jersey rule making out-of-state programs seek approval before clinicals, so your planning centers on GW's own process and on finding the right preceptor in a crowded two-metro state.

What New Jersey's rules ask of your clinicals
New Jersey's nursing-education rules (N.J.A.C. 13:37) are written for schools the state licenses at home. One provision, 13:37-1.10(c), even addresses New Jersey programs placing students outside New Jersey, yet none requires a visiting school to seek approval or give notice. The Board's website was unreachable when these rules were checked, so guidance posted only there is unverified; GW's Clinical Placement Team confirms site and state requirements before it clears you.
Joint protocols with a collaborating physician are what let a New Jersey NP order drugs or devices, which is why AANP files the state under reduced practice. An NP who precepts you there teaches within those protocols. GW's own rules for who may precept still govern; see preceptor requirements.
Two metros, many systems
New Jersey's population leans toward two metros that cross state lines: roughly 7.1 million live on the New Jersey side of the metro anchored by New York, Newark and Jersey City and about 1.4 million in Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington. Smaller hubs include Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton.
Major systems include RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, with Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care widening the field. New Jersey has no statewide preceptor incentive on record in the sources we checked, and GW's Clinical Placement Team can share its list of sites and preceptors previously used in the state; our site database page explains what that list can and cannot tell you.
Licensing, the compact and trips to Washington
The Nurse Licensure Compact took effect in New Jersey on November 15, 2021. With New Jersey as your primary state of residence, a multistate license carries you into Pennsylvania, Delaware and other member states, while a New York site needs a New York license. GW's rule is simple: your RN license has to reach every state where you rotate.

Questions GW students ask
Must GW file anything with New Jersey before my clinicals?
We found no New Jersey rule calling for a filing; the state's education rules cover programs it licenses. Guidance posted only on the Board's site went unchecked because the site was unreachable, so GW's Clinical Placement Team has the final word on any state or site requirement when it reviews and clears your placement.
I live in South Jersey. Can I rotate in Philadelphia or Wilmington?
Yes, if GW approves the site. A multistate license issued by New Jersey covers Pennsylvania and Delaware through the compact. Delaware wants schools from other states to give its nursing board notice before students train in a Delaware facility, so leave time for that step; see our Delaware guide.
Are GW's Acute Care NP options open to New Jersey residents?
No. GW limits its Acute Care tracks to residents of DC, Maryland and Virginia, with clinicals in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. New Jersey residents can still pick an FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP track, in the MSN or post-BSN DNP, or a PMHNP or AGPCNP certificate.
When should a New Jersey student start the preceptor search?
Earlier than feels necessary. GW's website lists request deadlines (fall May 1, spring October 1, summer February 1), its 2026 CORE workshop gives different priority dates, and GW cautions that preceptors and sites often fill their calendars over a year out. Our deadlines guide compares the dates.
