Delaware and GW's online nursing programs
Delaware residents can apply to GW's online programs, and GW's disclosures list Delaware as meeting requirements for its nurse practitioner tracks. The state does ask something of the school: before students use a Delaware clinical facility, a program from elsewhere must notify Delaware's Board of Nursing and file supporting documents.

The midwifery line is the one to raise with GW admissions if you intend to practice as a certified nurse-midwife in Delaware. Nothing else on GW's state authorizations page limits Delaware applicants.
Delaware's notice rule for schools from other states
Delaware's education standards (24 Del. Admin. Code 1900-2.0) are addressed to "all nursing education programs," graduate and pre-licensure alike. A school based in another state tells the Board before it uses any Delaware clinical facility, and it files the following first:
- Proof of approval from its home board, or of national accreditation
- A copy of every clinical agency agreement it holds
- What it requires of clinical faculty and of preceptors
- Who those faculty and preceptors are, and where each is assigned
- Current Delaware or multistate licenses for every one of them
The Board also signs off on each facility, using forms from the school, before any student is placed there, and it may send representatives to look. Delaware keeps no public list of out-of-state programs, so whether GW has filed is not something you can look up; GW's Clinical Placement Team clears state and site requirements before your first shift. That extra step is one more reason to respect GW's placement request deadlines.
Full practice, and who can precept you in Delaware
AANP counts Delaware among the full practice states. Delaware's governor signed the APRN Compact on August 4, 2021, and it remains dormant until seven states join; five have so far.
On paper, Delaware's definition of a preceptor is broad: any validly licensed nurse with at least a BSN. Its online-program rule is tighter. Whoever precepts in a Delaware facility must hold a license or privilege matching or exceeding the role the student is training for, so an RN alone could not precept an NP student there. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide narrows the field again, to nurse practitioners, MDs, DOs and CNMs with at least two years in advanced practice. See preceptor requirements.
Where Delaware students look, and crossing into Maryland
Delaware's systems include ChristianaCare and Bayhealth, plus Beebe Healthcare and Nemours Children's Health, a pediatric system whose Delaware hospital is in Wilmington. Around 588,000 Delawareans live in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro, close to 195,000 in greater Dover and about 277,000 in the Seaford area. None of our sources shows a Delaware preceptor incentive.
Delaware's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018. With Delaware as your home state, a multistate license covers sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and GW wants your license to reach wherever you rotate. For NP students, GW's on-campus events, CLASI during NURS 6222 and OSCEs in the second clinical course, take place in the Washington area.

Questions GW students ask
Is GW on Delaware's list of approved out-of-state programs?
Delaware keeps no such public list. Its rule has out-of-state schools notify the Board and file documents before using a Delaware facility, and whether GW has filed is not published anywhere we could find. GW's Clinical Placement Team handles state requirements as part of clearing you for a Delaware site.
Can I do clinicals in Maryland while living in Delaware?
Yes, once GW approves the site. Maryland and Delaware are compact partners, so a Delaware multistate license reaches Maryland, and our research found no Maryland approval step for out-of-state programs. Our Maryland guide covers the state's health systems and its preceptor tax credit.
Why is Nurse-Midwifery "not yet determined" for Delaware?
GW's midwifery disclosure, captured in October 2024, puts Delaware in that group with Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Wisconsin. GW gives no public reason. If you plan to practice as a nurse-midwife in Delaware, ask GW admissions before you enroll.
Can a BSN-prepared RN precept me in Delaware?
Not for NP clinicals. For online programs, Delaware wants a preceptor licensed at the student's future level or higher, and under GW's 2021 clinical placement guide the preceptor must be an NP, a physician or a certified nurse-midwife with two advanced practice years behind them.
