Minnesota on GW's authorization list
Minnesota appears nowhere on GW's State Authorizations page, which is good news: no Minnesota-specific block exists. Your choice of track is limited only by GW's Acute Care residency rule.

Statute, GW and the site: three answers on licensing
Start with the statute, which is generous. Minn. Stat. 148.271(6) lets a nurse holding another state's RN license practice in Minnesota while enrolled in a structured course of study toward a higher degree, for the work that course requires. Minn. R. 6305.0300 counts a home-state-approved program as approved for the separate student exemption, yet it expects the supervising instructor to carry a Minnesota RN license and current registration. We found no Board step for approving out-of-state programs.
GW sits a layer above that. Clearance requires an RN license covering each state where you rotate, and Minnesota has never entered the compact and has no bill moving to enter it, so no multistate card from elsewhere counts. Whatever the exemption allows, plan on a Minnesota license. The RN license guide covers GW's side.
Sites form the top layer. Mayo Clinic's program for NP learners, for one, wants its own contract with your school, a clean Minnesota license that is currently registered, a Minnesota DHS background study, and faculty of record licensed in the state of the experience.
Minnesota's student exemption is not a GW clearance: GW and sites like Mayo still look for a Minnesota license.
Full practice, and where Minnesota students look
Once a Minnesota NP logs 2,080 hours inside a collaborative arrangement with a physician or another APRN, AANP counts them as full practice. Seasoned Minnesota NPs therefore practice without a required agreement, and those with two years in advanced practice fit GW's preceptor requirements.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metro holds roughly 3.6 million Minnesotans; Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud follow far behind. Large systems include Allina Health, HealthPartners, M Health Fairview, Essentia Health and, in Rochester, Mayo Clinic. Two metros, the Twin Cities and Duluth, spill into Wisconsin. One incentive myth to clear up: Minnesota's MERC fund partly repays training sites, never individual preceptors, and only when the accredited teaching program is itself based in Minnesota. A GW rotation earns the site nothing from MERC.

Questions GW students ask
Will I need to fly to Washington, DC from Minnesota?
If you're in an NP track, plan on it. GW runs CLASI while you take NURS 6222, OSCEs during your second clinical course and a skills assessment near the end, and its 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs meet at Ross Hall on the Foggy Bottom campus. PMHNP students get a virtual CLASI, with an on-campus event in NURS 6248 starting Fall 2027. Dates are on the OSCE page.
I hold a Wisconsin multistate license. Can I train in Minnesota?
Only after adding a Minnesota license. Because Minnesota never joined the compact, a Wisconsin multistate license carries no privilege on the Minnesota side, and GW wants a license for each rotation state. GW's page also lists Wisconsin among the states whose residents its online programs can't take, so settle your admission status with GW admissions before anything else.
Can a GW student rotate at Mayo Clinic?
Mayo publishes its own conditions for NP learners, including a contract with your school, a Minnesota license plus a DHS background study, and properly licensed faculty of record. Whether GW holds or can sign that agreement is a question for GW's Clinical Placement Team, and any Mayo preceptor you propose still passes through program director review like every other site.
When should my Minnesota license be active?
Before GW clears you, since the license check is part of clearance and hours may begin only after the clearance notice, at the start of the term. File the Minnesota application as soon as you settle on a Minnesota site rather than waiting for a preceptor's yes. See clearance for the other items GW checks.
