GW Nursing from Maine: programs, preceptors and trips south
Apart from the three Acute Care options, all of GW's online nursing programs take applicants from Maine, and every GW disclosure with a state list places Maine among those whose requirements are met. No Maine Board of Nursing guidance on schools from other states using Maine clinical sites turns up, so a Maine rotation rests on two things: GW's own approval steps and the license you hold.

Maine goes unmentioned on GW's State Authorizations page; the Acute Care residency rule is the lone exception.

A board that says nothing about visiting programs
Search Maine's nursing board for guidance on schools from other states placing students at Maine sites and nothing comes back: its rules list and education pages link to no such material. Chapter 7, the board's education rule, concerns approval of Maine's own pre-licensure programs and has no clause on clinical placements from elsewhere.
Maine exempts students from licensure under 32 MRSA §2103(2) only when they are enrolled in a board-approved program leading toward a first license. A licensed RN in a GW graduate program is a different case, so your own license is what carries a Maine rotation. Everything else is GW's sequence of Site Prospector submission, program director review, affiliation agreement and Complio clearance, laid out in GW's placement process.
Maine's 24-month rule and who precepts you
AANP lists Maine as full practice after 24 months of supervised practice, with a physician or an NP as supervisor, or after employment at a clinic or hospital whose medical director is a physician. GW's own standard, two years or more in advanced practice with a current, unencumbered license, falls close to that line, and each name still goes to the program director for review.
Midwifery students should know that GW's midwifery disclosure, a shorter list than the NP one, still counts Maine as meeting requirements, and GW accepts CNMs as preceptors; see midwifery immersion.
Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
Portland-South Portland, near 578,000 residents, is by far the largest metro; Lewiston-Auburn (around 116,000) and Bangor (around 158,000) come next. The health systems a Maine student is likely to meet are Northern Light Health, MaineHealth, Central Maine Healthcare and MaineGeneral Health.
No Maine tax credit or grant for preceptors turned up in state sources. What Maine clinicians who teach you receive comes from GW: access to Himmelfarb, GW's health sciences library, an opening to give a guest lecture, and contact with fellow preceptors.
Your license, and the trips south
Maine's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018. A Mainer's multistate license stretches to New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island, but Massachusetts has yet to switch the compact on and is aiming for May 2027. GW's RN license rule wants a valid license on file for each rotation state.
Then there is getting to GW. Expect three kinds of campus visit as an NP student: CLASI alongside NURS 6222, OSCEs once you reach your second clinical course, and a closing skills assessment. Questions GW students ask
Does GW need the Maine board's permission before my rotation?
Nothing in the Maine board's rules or education pages addresses out-of-state programs' clinical placements; Chapter 7 deals with Maine's own pre-licensure programs. Your start depends on GW's clearance instead: an executed agreement, preceptor documents, Complio and any site requirement. GW's Clinical Placement Team handles whatever a particular Maine site adds.
Can a Maine certified nurse-midwife precept my GW immersion hours?
CNMs sit on the 2021 guide's preceptor list next to NPs, MDs and DOs, and all need two years or more of advanced practice. NURS 6321 and NURS 6322, the two immersion courses, hold all 840 midwifery hours, and GW's midwifery page stresses its network of midwives, with an emphasis on birth centers and home birth. I live in Maine but work in New Hampshire. Which license covers a New Hampshire rotation?
Your Maine multistate license does, since both states have been compact members since January 19, 2018. The preceptor still has to meet GW's rules, and GW needs your license on file before clearing you. Can a small Maine practice host me instead of a large health system?
GW approves a preceptor at a site, not a health system, so a small practice can work when the clinician meets GW's rules and the practice signs GW's affiliation agreement. GW notes agreements may run weeks or months, and CORE takes a separate Site Prospector entry for every preceptor-site pairing in every rotation and term.
