A GW Nursing clinical term runs across several systems, and each one has a single job. CORE holds your placement requests, hours and evaluations; Complio, or CastleBranch for BSN students, holds your compliance file; Blackboard holds your courses and the clinical placement documents; GWeb handles registration and grades; and GWMail is where GW reaches you.

Each system and what it is for
GW names these systems on its Compliance and Clinical page, its Clinical Rotations page, its IT pages and the Bulletin. The table below pairs each with its job and the stretch of your program when it carries the most weight.

CORE and the compliance trackers
GW Nursing describes CORE as the home for clinical requests and the repository for clinical hours and clinical documents. Access is granted before NURS 6222 begins. If your plan puts a clinical course in your very first semester, as most post-master's certificate plans do, you ask the Clinical Placement Team for access instead. Every preceptor, site, rotation and term gets its own Site Prospector submission in CORE, and the CORE ELMS guide walks through its screens.
Complio, run by American DataBank, is the graduate compliance tracker, ordered through gwucompliance.com. GW's instruction is direct: do not buy the account more than four months before your clinical start. Accelerated and Veterans BSN students use CastleBranch for the same purpose. Both trackers feed clearance, and the full list of uploads is on the Complio requirements page. A finished CORE request still waits on an unfinished compliance file, so the two move together.
Blackboard, GWeb and DegreeMap
Blackboard is the learning management system GW Nursing links from its homepage. The Clinical Rotations page says admitted students find all required clinical placement documents there, and the 2023-24 undergraduate handbook makes checking GW email and Blackboard a regular student duty. A September 2026 search found no GW announcement of a move to another platform. The same handbook notes that once final grades post to Banner, nursing courses close from student view, so save syllabi, rubrics and feedback before a term wraps up.
GWeb, which GW also calls Banner, Banner Self Service or Banweb, is where you plan registration, add and drop courses, pay tuition, view grades and transcripts, and update your address. Faculty record Incomplete grades there. DegreeMap, reached through GWeb, is the live degree audit you and your advisor share. GW Nursing notes that it does not follow the registration timeline other GW schools use, so take your dates from the nursing calendar and your plan of study.
GWMail, the GWorld card and Himmelfarb
GWMail is GW's email system, hosted on Google, with addresses ending in @gwu.edu. The Bulletin says GW sends academic, administrative and emergency information to the address tied to your UserID, and GW tells graduate students to watch that inbox for the clinical webinar invitation. Placement messages arrive there as well, so an unread GW email can quietly hold up a clearance step.
The GWorld card is GW's official ID, and it can be carried on your phone. BSN students must have it with them on campus. A 2021 GW page said GW Hospital used the GW ID in place of a hospital badge; treat that as dated until confirmed.
The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library sits at 2300 Eye Street NW in Foggy Bottom and serves the educational, research and clinical needs of GW's nursing students. Its nursing guide centers on CINAHL, ClinicalKey for Nursing and PubMed, with an FNP subguide for physical exam, diagnosis and drug information and a separate guide for distance students. GW also offers Himmelfarb access to the preceptors who teach its students.

- End of termMake sure preceptor evaluations are in CORE, download Blackboard materials, and check your grade in GWeb.

- GW Nursing's Forms page, whose Box files include the Pre-Clinical Requirements Checklist, the physical examination form, the Clinical Preceptor Biography, and the Grade Appeal and Request for Policy Exception forms

No separate School of Nursing student portal turned up beyond these. Two older GW forms, the checklist's section label and a 2018 physical exam form, still mention CastleBranch; for graduate students, Complio is the current tracker. If you are unsure which system a task belongs in, the semester calendar and your course site are good places to start.

Questions GW students ask
Does GW Nursing use Blackboard or Canvas?
Blackboard. GW Nursing's homepage links to blackboard.gwu.edu, and the Clinical Rotations page says admitted students find all required clinical placement documents on Blackboard. A search in September 2026 turned up no GW announcement of a switch to another platform, so check each term's course list for the current link.
Is CORE the same thing as Complio?
No. CORE handles the placement itself: Site Prospector requests, clearance notices, hour and encounter logs and evaluations. Complio holds your compliance file, meaning the background check, drug screen, immunizations, license and other uploads. Clearance needs both, which is why a finished CORE request can still sit waiting on an incomplete Complio file.
Which email address does GW use for clinical placement messages?
Your GW address, the one tied to your UserID. The Bulletin says GW uses it for academic, administrative and emergency information, and GW tells graduate students to watch it for the clinical webinar invitation. Giving preceptors and site contacts the same address keeps the whole placement thread in one inbox.
Can my preceptor use GW's library?
Yes. Library access at Himmelfarb is one of the perks GW names for preceptors on its recruiting page; the others are guest lecturing at GW Nursing and working alongside fellow preceptors. It is worth mentioning when you ask a clinician to host you.
Is there one GW Nursing student portal for everything?
Not one that GW publishes. Clinical students work across Blackboard, CORE, Complio or CastleBranch, GWeb and several Smartsheet dashboards, including the NP On-Campus Events Dashboard. Bookmark each at the start of the program, because GW's pages link to them from several different places rather than one hub.
