GW's post-master's PMHNP certificate: clinical rotations from the very first course
GW's psychiatric mental health certificate adds 600 precepted hours to a master's in nursing across 22 credits, and GW puts the timing bluntly: "Clinical rotations begin with the first course, NURS 6245." You complete the hours where you live, so your first psychiatric preceptor has to be confirmed before the fall term opens.

Seven courses make the 22 credits: two didactic courses paired with the first and last clinical courses, and five precepted psychiatric courses of 120 hours each. The certificate starts in the fall. GW's deadlines page listed Fall 2026 with a May 1 final deadline, although the program page itself still showed Fall 2025 in June 2026.
GW's certificate plan of study is not archived, so the full term-by-term order is not public. The Bulletin's regulations give the PMHNP certificate up to six semesters, longer than the four allowed for the other NP certificates. Course-by-course detail sits on the PMHNP clinical courses page.
Entry requirements that shape your clinicals
The Bulletin 2026-27 asks for an MSN, the three advanced courses (graduate pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment), an active RN license and current CPR. With those already behind you, the certificate holds no health assessment course, and clinicals can begin at once.
Two groups meet hurdles. If you hold a direct-entry MSN or CNL degree, GW's FAQ gives two answers, first ruling you out of post-master's certificates and then asking you to finish the advanced courses before applying; admissions can say which holds. And residents of Tennessee or Utah cannot enter any GW post-master's NP certificate under the State Authorizations page, which also carries the school-wide limits on Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Wisconsin and New York. Each state you rotate in needs its own RN license on file, and Complio has to show your items cleared before the first shift.
First course, first rotation: the timing problem
GW's MSN and DNP nurse practitioner students get a pre-clinical semester, in NURS 6222, to settle a preceptor. PMHNP certificate students skip that step: NURS 6245 is your first course and your first rotation, alongside NURS 6242 Psychopharmacology. GW's 2021 guide advised certificate students to start looking the moment they were admitted, and that advice fits this certificate exactly.
Look at the dates side by side. The Fall 2026 final application deadline on GW's deadlines page was May 1, the same day GW's website sets for fall clinical requests. The 2026 CORE workshop listed a May 15, 2026 priority date for Fall 2026 site submissions. A student admitted near the final deadline can be searching after the request date has passed, so email sonclinical@gwu.edu, the Clinical Placement Team's inbox, to ask how late first-semester requests are handled and when your CORE access opens.

Your first course is a clinical course. Secure a psychiatric preceptor for NURS 6245 before you are even registered, if you can.
Clinicals in your own community
GW's certificate page says students complete the requirements "in their own communities." You rotate near home, wherever you hold an RN license, and GW's Join Our Faculty page shows the school recruiting remote preceptors across most of the country.
Very little of the certificate happens on campus. CLASI for psychiatric students is virtual. The one change is at the end: from Fall 2027, the final course, NURS 6248, brings you to campus for one in-person simulation event. GW's FAQ lists VSTC in Ashburn as the usual venue, and dates appear on the NP On-Campus Events Dashboard, so budget one trip if your NURS 6248 term is fall 2027 or later.
Students outside DC, Maryland and Virginia can read clinicals outside the DMV for license and state approval details.
Preceptors for five psychiatric courses
Under GW's 2021 placement guide, your preceptor can be a nurse practitioner, a physician (MD or DO) or a certified nurse-midwife, as long as they have practiced at the advanced level for two years or longer and hold a clean license. The guide adds one rule specific to this sequence: NURS 6248 needs a PMHNP or CNS. Rules may have changed since 2021, so check with your course. In the Bulletin's course list, NURS 6245 is a practicum run alongside the coursework, overseen by faculty and preceptors together, at 120 clinical hours or more.
The course titles point to the kind of practice each needs: diagnostic assessment, work with families and groups, care of individuals, population-based care and integrated practice. In CORE, you file a separate Site Prospector entry for every preceptor at every site, for each rotation and each term, and attach the license and a bio or CV each time. Questions GW students ask
Can I take GW's PMHNP certificate if I am already an FNP?
The Bulletin's entry list for the PMHNP certificate asks for an MSN, graduate pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment, an active RN license and current CPR. It names no required NP specialty, unlike GW's FNP certificate, which listed eligible populations. Ask admissions how your earlier coursework will be reviewed before you apply.
Is GW's PMHNP certificate fully online?
Almost. Coursework is online, CLASI is virtual and your clinical hours happen in your own community. The exception arrives with NURS 6248: from Fall 2027, students in that course attend an on-campus, simulation-based learning event. Date and venue will be posted on GW's NP events dashboard after you enroll.
How long does the GW PMHNP certificate take?
GW has not published an archived plan of study for the certificate, so the exact term count is not public. The Bulletin's regulations allow up to six semesters to complete it. With five clinical courses of 120 hours, your advisor and program director can confirm how the courses stack in your plan.
Does GW place PMHNP certificate students with preceptors?
The search belongs to you, per GW's Compliance and Clinical page. What GW adds is help around it: on request, names of sites and preceptors that past GW students used near you, mentoring through its placement model, and a program director who reviews every request.
Do I need a psychiatric preceptor for every course?
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide names a PMHNP or CNS preceptor only for NURS 6248. For the other four courses it applies the general list: NP, MD, DO or CNM with two years in advanced practice. Each course still has to fit its psychiatric objectives, so your course faculty make the final judgment on fit.
