Florida students in GW Nursing's online programs
GW Nursing's State Authorizations page puts no limit on Florida, though an older provost page still names Florida among states where some GW programs may be unavailable. Florida's approval law reaches only pre-licensure schools, so a GW NP student in Miami, Tampa, Orlando or Jacksonville mostly needs the right preceptor, a license and GW's clearance.

Two GW pages, one current answer
The School of Nursing's State Authorizations page, which GW's program pages link to, lists no Florida restriction for any online program. The provost's state authorization page carries a sentence that dates back to 2017: residents of several states, Florida among them, may find that not all programs are available. The nursing school's list is the newer one, and GW's licensure disclosures also mark Florida as meeting requirements for the NP tracks, DNP, NP certificates and Nurse-Midwifery. Ask GW admissions to confirm your program before you enroll.

Florida law and out-of-state graduate programs
Florida's approval statute, s. 464.019, speaks to an institution that wants to educate nurses for their first license in the state; the Board, for its part, describes its role as approving pre-licensure programs. Nothing comparable binds master's or doctoral schools from other states: no Florida provision surfaced that makes them ask permission or file notice ahead of a clinical placement. For you, GW's review is the checkpoint: program director approval, a contract with the site and clearance.
On AANP's map Florida is restricted. Select Florida NPs keep a protocol agreement with a physician throughout their careers, though exemptions may apply. Florida NPs and physicians alike can meet GW's preceptor profile, which asks for two years of advanced practice and a clean, current license.
Four big metros, and the systems students try
Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach leads Florida's metros, followed by Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, then Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, with Jacksonville fourth at about 1.8 million people. UF Health and BayCare Health System are common starting points for NP students, as are AdventHealth, HCA Florida Healthcare and Baptist Health South Florida, alongside private practices and community clinics. GW cautions that popular preceptors are often committed more than a year out, so start a Florida search well before GW's request deadlines.
TEACH funding: a Florida incentive GW rotations sit outside
The TEACH program that AHCA administers under s. 409.91256 (the letters stand for Training, Education, and Clinicals in Health) pays qualified facilities for each clinical hour they host primary care APRN students and nursing students. It is a facility reimbursement rather than a preceptor tax credit, depends on appropriations, and requires Florida-licensed preceptors. Qualifying hosts range from FQHCs and rural health clinics to community mental health centers, CCBHCs and certain nonprofits in shortage areas.
Only students from accredited Florida-based programs generate reimbursement, so a clinic hosting a GW student can't bill TEACH for those hours. The statute is scheduled for repeal on July 1, 2034.
Your license, and trips north for campus events
Florida put multistate licensing into effect on January 19, 2018. A Florida multistate license covers Florida rotations and those in other member states, which meets GW's rule that a license reach every state where you train; see RN licenses for GW clinicals.
Plan for a few flights. NP students attend CLASI during NURS 6222, OSCEs come in the second clinical course for FNP and AGPCNP students, and a final skills assessment closes the program. For 2026-27, OSCE 1 runs October 5 to 6, 2026 and OSCE 2 runs February 27 to 28, 2027, both at Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom. The OSCE guide has the rest.

Does GW accept Florida residents into its online FNP program?

An older provost page still says some programs may be unavailable to Florida residents, so get a confirmation from GW admissions before you apply.
Does GW need Florida Board of Nursing approval before my clinicals?
Florida's approval process concerns schools preparing nurses for a first license. For an out-of-state MSN or DNP, no permission or notice step with the Board turned up in Florida law. Your rotation still passes through GW's steps: program director approval, a contract with the site and clearance from the Clinical Placement Team.
Can my Florida clinic claim TEACH funding for my GW hours?
No. TEACH pays facilities only for hours logged by students of accredited Florida-based programs, and GW is based in Washington, DC. The program also needs Florida-licensed preceptors and state appropriations. GW rewards its preceptors in other ways, such as Himmelfarb library privileges and guest lecturing.
Do PMHNP students from Florida travel for CLASI too?
Not for CLASI: GW lists a virtual CLASI for the DNP and certificate PMHNP options. From Fall 2027, though, students in NURS 6248 must attend an on-campus, simulation-based event, so Florida PMHNP students should budget for at least one trip. Check your program page for current details.
