Studying with GW Nursing from Washington, DC
The District is GW's home jurisdiction. The university sits in Foggy Bottom, the DC Board of Nursing approves GW's APRN programs, and none of GW's state limits touch District residents. Clinicals here still carry District rules of their own, beginning with a DC RN license, because DC stands outside the Nurse Licensure Compact.

What GW's authorizations mean for DC residents
Nothing in GW's enrollment rules holds a District resident back. GW's State Authorizations page lists no DC restriction, GW takes part in SARA through the District's own portal agency, the Higher Education Licensure Commission at OSSE, and GW's professional licensure disclosures list Washington, D.C. as meeting requirements for each nursing program they cover. For an online student, those disclosures treat your current address as your location, so they follow you if you move into or out of the District.

Practice rules and your DC license
District NPs work under full practice authority, licensed by the Board of Nursing alone and recognized in DC rules as primary care providers. For you, that widens the field of possible preceptors: an experienced District NP can take you on without a supervising physician in the picture. DC's rules for APRN clinicals accept an NP or a physician with a comparable practice focus, and GW's own list adds certified nurse-midwives and the two-year experience standard. The license question works differently for District residents than for commuters. If you live in DC, your home license is a District license, which is single-state, and a multistate license can only come from a compact state where you live. A rotation in Maryland or Virginia would therefore need a license from that state.
Neighbors coming in from Maryland or Virginia face the reverse: their multistate license stops at the District line, so GW's 2026 CORE workshop steers DC-area students toward carrying a District license next to their multistate one. Since August 4, 2025, DC Health has offered those nurses an expedited endorsement route. More on GW's rule is on the RN license page.
Your DC RN license must be issued, not pending, before GW can clear you for a District site.
Why the Board's 2025 memo favors DC students
DC Health's Board of Nursing stopped accepting new distance-program placements in December 2024, then reopened them on August 6, 2025 with conditions. Programs from elsewhere placing students under SARA may have no more than ten students at a clinical site at any one time without extra approval, and DC Health said it would prioritize students in DC-based programs and District residents enrolled in distance programs.
On paper, a GW student living in the District fits both favored groups: GW's APRN program is on the Board's approved list, and you live here. What is not public is how each District hospital classifies GW's online graduate courses, so a site may still ask questions. The Clinical Placement Team can answer for GW, and the Board's own requirements for programs based elsewhere are walked through on the DC rules page linked above.
Where DC NP students look for rotations
The District's hospitals and clinics are the obvious first stop, though each one runs its own intake and some publish none. These are examples of where NP students look, not places that have agreed to take GW students:
- MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown, where graduate students bring a preceptor who has already agreed, and MedStar's request form follows an education affiliation agreement.
- Children's National Hospital, the region's only standalone children's hospital, which takes requests only through myClinicalExchange and asks students not to approach its preceptors.
- GW University Hospital in Foggy Bottom, owned by Universal Health Services with an academic affiliation to GW, and listed among GW Nursing's hospital agreements.
- Sibley Memorial Hospital, part of Johns Hopkins Medicine; Howard University Hospital; and Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health, which opened in Ward 8 on April 15, 2025 with 136 beds.
- Unity Health Care, the District's nonprofit community health center network, and the DC VA Medical Center, which trains students under VA affiliation rules.
The pool is small. Federal estimates count about 680 NPs working in the District in 2025, so District students often search across the river too. Each system's intake steps are on the DC preceptor guide, and the neighbors are covered on Maryland and Virginia.
Ross Hall, Himmelfarb and GW's Foggy Bottom campus
GW Nursing's daily base is VSTC in Ashburn, and its Foggy Bottom presence is mostly research offices, which moved on June 25, 2026 to Lisner Hall and 714 21st St NW. For a District student, Foggy Bottom still matters. The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library at 2300 Eye Street NW supports GW's nursing programs, and access to it is one of the things GW offers the clinicians who precept you.
Ross Hall hosts GW's 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs: October 5 and 6, 2026, then February 27 and 28, 2027, in the CLASS Center on the fourth floor and nearby rooms. GW's FAQ still describes Ashburn as the usual site for on-campus testing, so confirm your own course's events on GW's NP events dashboard. The OSCE page covers each track. When you do need Ashburn, GW counts 14 Metro stops between the two campuses and runs a shuttle.
Acute care students living in the District
The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care options are the one GW NP track tied to this region. GW's Bulletin says clinical placements are selected jointly by the student and the program director and carried out in Northern Virginia, Maryland or DC, and its DNP and certificate pages add that students must live in one of those three places while taking NURS 6235, NURS 6236 and NURS 6237. Other GW pages describe the program director arranging placements, so confirm how your cohort works.
For a District resident, that means hospital medicine and critical care rotations are within reach at home or just across the line. A District site needs your DC RN license, a Maryland or Northern Virginia site needs a license from that state, and your Complio file also needs a current ACLS card. Questions GW students ask
I live in DC. Can I do some rotations in Maryland or Virginia?
Yes, with the right license. A DC license is single-state, and a multistate license is issued only by a compact state where you live, so a Maryland or Virginia site needs a license from that state. GW checks for a license covering each state where you rotate, and acute care students may train in all three places.
Will DC's ten-student cap block my District placement?
The cap in the Board's 2025 memo applies to programs from elsewhere placing students under SARA. GW's APRN program is on the DC Board's approved list, and the same memo says DC Health wants to prioritize DC-based programs and District residents. How a particular hospital classifies GW's online courses is not public, so confirm with GW's Clinical Placement Team.
Are GW's OSCEs in DC or in Ashburn?
Both appear in GW's sources. The 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs are scheduled at Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom, while GW's FAQ describes VSTC in Ashburn as the usual venue for on-campus testing and training. Is there a District incentive for clinicians who precept GW students?
No DC preceptor tax credit or stipend program turned up in research dated September 2026. GW itself offers its preceptors Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library access, a chance to guest lecture at GW Nursing and an invitation to collaborate with other preceptors. Maryland's preceptor tax credit is the closest state program, with its own eligibility rules.
Does GW's DC Board approval mean District hospitals must accept me?
No. Board approval concerns GW's program, not any hospital's decision. Every site still chooses its own students, runs its own intake and needs an executed affiliation agreement with GW Nursing, and GW's program director must approve the site and preceptor before the Clinical Placement Team clears you.
