What to look for in a placement service for GW Nursing
A strong placement service for GW students does far more than hand you a name. It knows how CORE, the Site Prospector and program director review work, finds settings that fit your specific course, prepares every preceptor document GW asks for, and stays on call until your hours are done. Start with GW's process, not a directory
A preceptor name is only useful if it survives GW's review. Every GW rotation begins as a Site Prospector submission in CORE and then clears five review stages, from the program director's check of course fit through to site onboarding, before the Clinical Placement Team clears you. A service that knows that route shapes every search around it.
So the first question to ask any service is simple: what happens after the preceptor says yes? The answer should name GW's steps and the documents each one needs. Our placement process guide lays out GW's route if you want to test a service's answer against it.
The checklist
Here is what the best placement service for a GW student does. Tick each one off before you commit.
A strong GW placement service:
- Asks for your course number first, because GW reviews the setting against that course
- Knows CORE well and prepares everything your Site Prospector submission asks you to attach, since the filing itself is yours
- Plans a separate submission whenever the preceptor, site, rotation or term changes, as GW's 2026 CORE workshop requires
- Checks preceptor credentials against GW's rules before you ever hear the name
- Identifies the site's authorized signatory and agreement contact for GW's affiliation agreement
- Confirms the email address GW will use for mid-semester and final evaluations
- Works inside GW's DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia boundary for Acute Care students
- Confirms your RN licensure covers the state where the rotation sits
- Schedules your first shift only after GW's clearance notification
- Stays on call, ready to search again the moment a preceptor pulls out
Course matching, in detail
GW's 2021 clinical placement guide gives each rotation a setting. The first FNP course calls for internal medicine without pediatric patients, the second for OB/GYN plus pediatrics, and the third for family practice with room for one short specialty site. The first AGPCNP course leaves out urgent care and long-term care; the third needs at least 120 long-term care hours. The Acute Care sequence runs from hospital medicine into critical care.
Those are 2021 rules, and current course requirements may differ, so a good service confirms them against your syllabus rather than assuming. It then searches for practices whose patient mix fills the hours the course demands. The rotation settings page shows the full list course by course.
Preceptor documents done right
GW's 2021 guide sets the preceptor bar: a nurse practitioner, physician or certified nurse-midwife who is two or more years into advanced practice and whose license is current and unencumbered, plus track rules such as a PMHNP or CNS preceptor for NURS 6248 and a master's-prepared preceptor for the leadership practicums. A service that knows GW collects the license and a bio or CV, or GW's Clinical Preceptor Biography form, before the name reaches you. It also tracks down the site's signing authority, who under GW's 2021 guide is normally someone other than the preceptor, and it prompts the preceptor to sign off on the final page of GW's preceptor guide, ready for your CORE upload.
Acute Care and geography
GW keeps every Acute Care clinical in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia, with its program director playing a close role in those placements, though GW's own pages describe the arrangement in different ways. A service worth hiring works within that area and alongside the program director, rather than offering a site two states away. The Acute Care placements page sets out what GW's sources say.
For every other track, geography is about licenses. GW expects RN licensure in every state that hosts one of your rotations, and its 2026 CORE workshop advises students near the District to carry DC licensure on top of a multistate license from Maryland or Virginia. A good service checks that before proposing a site across a state line.
On call after the match
Preceptors change jobs, go on leave and rethink their schedules. When that happens, GW's placement model sends you back to identifying a site with ongoing support, and under GW's 2021 guide a replacement preceptor has to be verified by the Clinical Placement Team before your first shift together. Should a placement service file my Site Prospector submission for me?
GW's Site Prospector form lives in your CORE account, so you are the one who files it. What a strong service supplies is every attachment and contact the form asks for: the preceptor's credentials, the site's signing authority, where evaluations should go and why the setting suits the course.
Can a placement service get my site approved faster?
Approval belongs to GW's program director and the Clinical Placement Team. A service helps by removing the usual causes of delay: a setting mismatched to the course, a missing license or CV, or the wrong agreement contact. A complete, well-matched submission gives GW's reviewers far less reason to send it back.
What if my program director turns down a preceptor the service found?
GW's placement model answers that with ongoing support and a return to identifying another site. A good service restarts right away for the same course, using the program director's feedback to aim at a better-fitting setting, and prepares a new package for the replacement.
Do placement services work for GW midwifery students?
They can, with the right match. GW's midwifery students complete 840 clinical hours across two immersion courses with a seasoned preceptor, and the program emphasizes birth centers and home birth. Look for a service that searches for midwifery practices able to carry you through both immersion semesters.
Is a nationwide preceptor directory the same as a placement service?
A directory gives you names; a placement service gives you a confirmed preceptor matched to your GW course, with the documents GW asks for. For GW students, the difference shows up at program director review, where fit and complete paperwork decide how smoothly a submission moves.
