California NP clinicals as a GW student
George Washington University appears on the California Board of Registered Nursing's page of approved out-of-state NP programs, for its adult-gerontology, family and psychiatric-mental health tracks. GW's own licensure disclosures still label California "not yet determined", so two official sources lean different ways, and California's license and preceptor rules apply whichever you read first.

GW programs a California resident can use
GW's State Authorizations page puts no limit on California. The friction sits in GW's disclosures: the MSN NP, post-BSN DNP, certificate and midwifery pages all mark California "not yet determined", while the BRN names GW and prints estimated yearly California enrollment of 2, 9 and 8 for its adult-gerontology, family and psych tracks. GW judges an online student's state by current address, so ask GW admissions how it reads California for your program before you enroll.

What the BRN demands under 16 CCR 1486
California keeps a tight hand on NP programs from elsewhere. Section 1486 of Title 16 makes a non-California NP program win Board approval before it places anyone in a California clinical setting, hold to NONPF and AACN standards and teach California's own NP law, standardized procedures included. The school starts by sending the BRN its clinical practice verification form, the Board decides at a Board meeting, and afterward the school keeps a preceptor form on file for every California preceptor it uses.
The same section governs who can precept you. A valid, active California license in the preceptor's own field is mandatory, as is qualification in the NP category you are studying. Schools orient their California preceptors and have faculty evaluate each one at least once in any two-year span, and the agency, the preceptor and the school sign a written agreement setting out the preceptor's role. Restricted practice and crowded markets
AANP classes California as restricted: NPs in certain settings and procedures work under a standardized protocol agreement, subject to exemptions. Your preceptor's setting therefore shapes what you see.
Competition for preceptors is intense. Kaiser Permanente, headquartered in Oakland and organized into Northern and Southern California regions, sits beside Sutter Health, Stanford Health Care, Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and the University of California's health systems at Davis, San Diego, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Francisco. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim alone held about 12.8 million people in 2025, ahead of Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario (about 4.8 million), San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont (4.6 million) and San Diego (3.3 million). Students report the strain: one GW graduate described a California physician preceptor with as many as six students at once.
A California RN license comes first
California sits outside the compact with no legislation in the works, and subsection (d) of the same regulation requires an NP student from a non-California school to hold an active, valid California RN license before training in the state. No multistate license reaches California sites. Because California's NP certification later requires that same RN license, the one you obtain now keeps paying off after graduation. Trips to DC for GW's skills events
Budget for travel east. NP students attend CLASI while enrolled in NURS 6222, sit OSCEs during the second clinical course and close the program with a skills assessment. GW's 2026-27 FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs are scheduled for October 5 and 6, 2026 and February 27 and 28, 2027 at Ross Hall on the Foggy Bottom campus, while PMHNP students take CLASI virtually. Is GW's online FNP approved for clinicals in California?
The BRN's out-of-state NP page lists George Washington University with a family track, plus adult-gerontology and psych/mental health. GW's own disclosure marks California "not yet determined" for licensure, so confirm with GW admissions how that applies to you, and hold a California RN license for every rotation.
Why would GW say "not yet determined" when the BRN lists it?
The two sources answer different questions. The BRN listing concerns approval for California clinical placements; GW's disclosure concerns whether the program meets California's licensure education requirements. GW has published no California determination, so ask GW admissions before relying on either one.
Can I enroll in GW's AGACNP from California since the BRN lists acute care?
No. The BRN entry reads "Adult Gero Primary/Acute", but GW requires Acute Care applicants to live in DC, Maryland or Virginia and keeps those clinicals there. Californians drawn to adult-gerontology care can look at GW's primary care track instead.
Does the BRN approval cover GW's Nurse-Midwifery program?
The BRN page lists GW's NP tracks only, with no midwifery entry, and GW's midwifery disclosure marks California "not yet determined". Before planning 840 immersion hours in California, ask the midwifery faculty and the Clinical Placement Team what applies.
