Alaska clinicals for GW nurse practitioner students
Every GW online program except the Acute Care options accepts Alaska residents. Alaska adds its own layer: you register each APRN preceptorship with the Alaska Board of Nursing, and because Alaska sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, GW's license rule means an Alaska RN license for Alaska rotations.

GW restricts Alaska nowhere, and its disclosures say every NP and midwifery program they cover meets Alaska's requirements.

Registering each preceptorship with the Alaska Board
Alaska approves no out-of-state programs and keeps no list of them; it regulates the student instead. Under 12 AAC 44.460, an RN in an APRN program based outside Alaska files an APRN Preceptorship Registration before training:
- An RN license in good standingThe form takes a license issued by Alaska or elsewhere, though GW's own rule is stricter (see the licensing section).
- Proof of current APRN enrollmentEvidence that you are an active GW student.
- The four-party agreementA copy of the preceptorship arrangement among GW, the facility, you and your preceptor, which the Board must approve.
- Form 08-4253 and its feeThe fee is non-refundable, so file once the agreement and dates are set.
- Mind the one-year clockYour registration lasts a year at most, or until the preceptorship finishes if that comes first, and it may be renewed a single time.
The agreement ties Alaska's timeline to GW's. GW's affiliation agreement with a new facility may need weeks or months, so begin early. A PMHNP student spreading 600 hours over five 120-hour courses may need that one renewal; check with the Board before switching preceptors mid-registration.
Who can precept in Alaska, and where students look
Alaska's form describes the preceptor as an APRN or physician, licensed without restriction or holding a privilege to practice, whose focus matches yours and who supervises, teaches and evaluates you in person. GW's 2021 clinical placement guide fits that, accepting NPs, physicians and CNMs once they have two years of advanced practice. AANP rates Alaska full practice.
Anchorage, home to about 406,000 people in 2025, holds the most options. Providence Alaska Medical Center belongs to Alaska's biggest hospital operator; Alaska Regional Hospital is an HCA facility; the Alaska Native Medical Center is tribally run. Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Fairbanks-College, near 94,000, has Foundation Health Partners (Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic), and Juneau counts about 31,600. Each would need its own GW agreement.
An Alaska license, since the compact stops at the border
A compact license from Washington or anywhere else gives you no privilege in Alaska. The registration form will take an RN license from elsewhere, but GW's pre-clinical checklist wants an unrestricted, current RN license for each state where your hours happen, so plan on an Alaska RN license; see GW's RN license rule.
Sources disagree on what comes next: an NLC tracking map reports no pending Alaska legislation, while the Board's compact page lists HB 131 and SB 124 as pending in the Legislature's 2025-2026 term. The APRN Compact has not been enacted in Alaska.

NP students attend CLASI while taking NURS 6222, OSCEs midway through the clinical sequence and a skills check at the end of the program; GW's 2026-27 dashboard sets FNP and AGPCNP OSCEs at Ross Hall in Foggy Bottom for October 5-6, 2026 and again February 27-28, 2027, while PMHNP CLASI is virtual. Questions GW students ask
Is Alaska's preceptorship registration the same as GW clearance?
No. The registration is Alaska's permission for you to train as an APRN student in a named preceptorship. GW clearance is separate: program director review, an executed affiliation agreement, Complio and any state requirements, then a clearance notice. You need both, and GW counts hours only from the start of the term after it clears you.
Does my GW faculty member need an Alaska license?
Only above a threshold set in 12 AAC 44.090(h). Once an outside program's instructor spends more than 20 working days in a licensing period grading Alaska clinical work or otherwise teaching or consulting in Alaskan nursing, an Alaska RN license is required. Managing that is GW's job, not yours or your preceptor's.
Can a physician precept me in Alaska?
Yes. Alaska's form lets a physician with an active, clean license and a comparable focus precept, and GW's 2021 guide accepts MDs and DOs with two years of practice. GW's one exception is NURS 6248 in the PMHNP track, where the guide calls for a PMHNP or CNS.
What if my Alaska rotations run longer than a year?
A registration covers a year at most, ending sooner if the preceptorship does, and it can be renewed once. If your GW plan keeps you with Alaska preceptors across several terms, note the expiry date when you register and file the renewal before it runs out. The Board's FAQ page carries the current form.
